German Shepherds are living and dying in misery due to intensive breeding for cosmetic reasons, a major new report by the Royal Veterinary College has found.
A survey of data collected from 430 clinics across the UK reveals arthritis, cancer, aggression and sloping backs are afflicting the breed at higher rates than others due to aggressive selection.
Nearly one in two German Shepherds is being put down because they are unable to walk, experts said.

Do you know what recessive genes are?
There is a calculation called Coefficient of Inbreeding. In any breed, healthy is under5%. We bred Standard poodles and our pups were about 2.4%. The only way to be safe and... don’t buy a pup whose COI is over10%
Thank you!!!
Yes
On average, how much do these dogs cost?
Heh, great pic! Great Black Shark indeed...:)
This is criminal. Why the hell do the dog clubs allow this!!!
Hmm, I don’t know. I don’t really know much about show dogs.
I do know her back is a horizontal line.
She has no slope at all. She is also a very fast runner.
You are welcome.
Dog genetics is a very complex thing.
You can try and improve one thing and wind up making something else exponentially worse.
It sucks.
:(
You are all awesome.
:)
This is true, Rumor is considered a very moderate dog compared to some Am showlines out there.
German Shepherds can run from anywhere from $200 for randomly bred pups in the classified ads that probably aren’t purebred to over $6500 for some pups out of VA Sieger show winners.

This is an accurate statement. Breeding is not exactly as cut and dry as people sometimes think it is, and sometimes it’s not as simple as just bringing in or eliminating dogs, either. The only good thing is with scientific advances, there are certain genetic tests you can have done to determine if dogs have or are carriers of certain things, but not all diseases/issues are a simple dominant/recessive.
Just curious, what is the reason they are phasing German Shepards out of the police department? What’s replacing them?
For the life of me I don’t get the point of dog shows.
It’s like having a Miss Universe contest where all the French contestants look like Bridgette Bardot, the Irish like Christina Hendricks, Italians like Sofia Loren, Americans Marylin Monroe, etc, etc and the winner is the one that looks the most like their country’s “standard”.
Health issues.
Malinois.
That is why I annoy liberals and buy purebred dogs.
I can research pedigrees pretty much back to the beginning of time and see who had what.
I don’t think you do. Not by that statement of “no recessive”. There is no such thing, and just because the word sounds negative, does not mean it is bad.
I guess all chestnut horses are bad.
I can tell by her head/face. Never mind the body!
My sister’s last GS was supposed to be all Euro. He defintely looked part, but he had the long face and narrow body of American type. Since she had him shipped as a pup 2000 miles, I wondered if she got ripped off with fraud.
Still, he was a nice dog. But again, beset with allergies...as seems to be a secret problem with Euro types.
