Mexican court forbids imports of US potatoes

A Mexican federal court has made an unusual ruling that bans the import of U.S. potatoes on the grounds the imports violate Mexicans’ right to food sovereignty and a healthy environment.

A group of Mexican potato growers had sought a constitutional injunction on the imports, claiming they threaten to spread agricultural diseases.

The court said Mexican agricultural authorities had failed to use methods like radiation treatment of imports to prevent diseases.

But because federal injunctions are intended only to protect constitutional rights, the ruling had to break some new ground.

The court ruled the ban must be implemented to preserve Mexicans’ collective rights to “preserve food sovereignty and the health of Mexican crop fields.”

The agriculture department had no immediate comment on the ruling.

Ok but first we kick all of their dirty, disease ridden green onions the hell out of our country!

Grocery stores in our local area only sell those onions from Mexico - period!

Sounds like a violation of NAFTA. Time to declare it void if the Mexicans won't follow it.

True. And to think that late blight of potato, Phytophthora infestans, originated in Mexico, these guys are nuts. We do not need any potatoes from Mexico, we produce and export an incredible amount. What are they trying to prove? Mexico has enough potatoes of its own.

That was back when the dems began to overreact to all republicans. The VP never did rid himself of that reputation for not being able to spell potato. Today, many would say
“So what? People make mistakes.” I have met so very intelligent people who make the same mistakes.
Most times, it’s just not worth your time to correct them.
Some folks do not take such constructive critiques very well.

Another example is in traffic. Years ago, if I saw someone’s tail light out, or blinker not working, I may tell them at the next red light. I no longer do such ‘help actions’.
Too many people just cannot handle being told that they made a mistake. It crosses all age, race and income levels.

I grow potatoes on my garden. I never ship any to Mexico. I don’t grow drugs or narco terrorists or MS 13 gang members, yet Mexico seems OK with them coming here.

I look at the country of origin, if it says Mexico, I don’t buy unless it is something we don’t produce much in the USA — avacodas, limes, etc.

I did not know about the potato war. We should ban all imports from that third world nation.

Sounds like a violation of NAFTA.

They are just getting ready for the renegotiation so they can have this as a bargaining chip. Nothing to worry about.

I guess it is time to do likewise to Mexico. If they love their potatoes that much, they can keep them.

I'll just bet but it's so hard to smell those CA onion fields from Kansas!

Thank God I travel there once a year!

The way I figure it is that if Mexico bans U.S. Potatoes, there will be more illegals crossing the Rio Grande into the U.S. just to get a chomp of our scrumptious "Made In USA" potatoes ......

Actually he didn't spell it wrong, he spelled it correctly as it was taught and used when he was in school.

Potatoe is an older but still correct spelling of the word more commonly word spelled potato.

It seems that the democrats and media did a damn fine job foisting of the Bolshevik that Quail was wrong.
