How to Slam Dunk Creationists on Evolution
RealClearScience ^ | August 3, 2017 | Paul Braterman

Posted on 08/06/2017 9:38:48 AM PDT by EveningStar

The 2001 discovery of the seven million-year-old Sahelanthropus, the first known upright ape-like creatures, was yet more proof of humanity’s place among the great apes. And yet Mike Pence, then a representative and now US vice president, argues for the opposite conclusion.

For him, our ideas about our ancestors have changed, proving once more that evolution was a theory, and therefore we should be free to teach other theories alongside evolution in our classrooms.

How to respond? The usual answer is that we should teach students the meaning of the word “theory” as used in science – that is, a hypothesis (or idea) that has stood up to repeated testing. Pence’s argument will then be exposed to be what philosophers call an equivocation – an argument that only seems to make sense because the same word is being used in two different senses.

Just words

Evolution, Pence argues, is a theory, theories are uncertain, therefore evolution is uncertain. But evolution is a theory only in the scientific sense of the word. And in the words of the National Academy of Sciences, “The formal scientific definition of theory is quite different from the everyday meaning of the word. It refers to a comprehensive explanation of some aspect of nature that is supported by a vast body of evidence.” Attaching this label to evolution is an indicator of strength, not weakness.

Faith and true science always agree.

The fool has said in his heart, “there is no God”. Evolution says the same thing. It should be noted that the sacred scriptures do not say, the fool has said in his ‘mind’ there is no God. Those who hold fast to the foolishness known as the “theory of evolution” do so from the heart, out of choice, from ill will and malice toward both both God and man.

Academics seem to have a corner on foolishness. Yet they beat us over the head with supposed facts that prove they are right and threats that if you disagree or poke fun at them that you are against science and hopelessly ignorant.

But evolution does indeed substitute an agent, his name is Chaos. Out of chaos everything we see has miraculously arisen. It just takes time, lots and lots of time for ridiculous results to happen.

Saying that man descended from cousin primates is an insult to our humanity. Concocted by the father of lies, who hates us for our relation to Jesus Christ, true God and true man, at whose name “every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth” Phil 2:10

Adam and Eve will be at our general judgement. I don’t think they will need to say anything.

Brilliant depiction of tbe Achilles heel of evolution: the assumption that unimaginable complexity arose spontaneously.

Exactly. Also, consider the human eye, an amazingly complex organ that does not “work” unless all of its many parts are functioning. So the eye “evolved” all of its intricate parts even though there was no benefit to the organism (us) until hundreds of millions of years later when every last “piece of the puzzle” was perfectly in place? Sounds like Intelligent Design to me!

“Faith should be strong enough not to require a scientific explanation for God” = People of faith should shut up and admit that their beliefs are irrational and have no basis in the “real world”, and that scientists - not theologians - are the arbitrators of Truth.

ROFL!!! What "repeated testing?" Their pieces of evidence are misinterpreted to fit their pet theory, but evolution has never been tested, nor can it be.

Yes - well put: evolutionists bow the knee before and place supreme, unquestioning faith in the god of Chaos (blind chance)

Definitely fake - “and fake science (”humans are causing the polar ice caps to melt and we’ll all be drowned when the oceans soon rise by 100 feet worldwide”) - it’s only 40 feet or so if ALL ice and snow were melted, including the ice cubes in your fridge.

Ahhhhhh!!! But they don't! They teach the Theory of Evolution as proven fact...

Didn't read past the word "science" did you?

“They will have heard of atomic theory”
Funny this article brings this up. Of course the world knows there are atomic bombs. And now the US faces threat by EMP bombs. Who knows what future exotic weapons are in store? Science the master of what? Destruction?
The truth is this, the only hope for those in this world is that Jesus Christ was sent to earth by God to take our sinfulness on him for the those willing to accept it.
And no one on this earth can take that away.

“Yep, they did the same to Galileo to save us all”

Actually Galileo only rediscovered the telescope - long range magnifying lens had been in use as far back as Old Kingdom Egypt and possibly Sumeria, just the blight of Islam wiped almost all evidence of such lens from common knowledge.

Now days such lens finds are classified as jewelry and stuffed in some dusty museum corner. The myth continues ...

I once asked an evolutionist that if they were asking me to believe that there was more intelligence put into the design of their clothes than into the design of their brain then, yes, I could believe that.

I read the excerpt (limted BW here), and the National Academy of Sciences quote, to me, wreaks of equivocation.

Just my two cents. Carry on!

really? if you believe in evolution..random mutations happen... but the random random mutations that give genetic advantage of survival to reproduction are therefore reproduced in The offspring
how do non reproducing genders give any reproductive advantage?

if one person belive in the theory of evolution and at the same time believe in multiple non reproducing gender spontaneously occurring and being valid ... that is the inconsistency in the same mind... the non sequitur

I don’t think evolution is necessarily random.

A group of scientists thought they had it all figured out and challenged God to a contest. First they said “We’ll start with this pile of dirt”. God said, “Oh No...get your own dirt.”
