Marco Rubio: Trump's immigration bill is 'not going to pass' the Senate
Washington Times ^ | August 7, 2017 | Melissa Quinn

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., thinks a new bill implementing a merit-based point system for foreigners seeking legal permanent status will never pass the Senate, even though it has President Trump's backing. "That bill's not going to pass," told CBS 4 in an interview Sunday. "I think the White House knows that you don't have 60 votes for that in the Senate."

That’s a good summary of Rubio. He was certainly trying to have it both ways. It’s good that people caught onto him in time. He could have done so much damage in higher office.

Chris Christie deserves a medal for exposing Marco in the debate as a shallow empty suit

They stink to high heaven. We have a lot more work to do to restore/achieve a loyal and representative ( and reasonably intelligent) congress

Marco wants demand to drive immigration and have competitive labor markets. Great! When do we get a visa for senate candidates to primary these jackasses?

Marco Rubio sponsored the last amnesty bill.

Every one of the GOP Senators who voted for it must be removed from office.

Graham has told us they will keep working for illegal aliens if we do not remove them from office.

Corker, Hatch, Heller and Flake in 2018

Graham and Alexander in 2020

Murkowsky, Hoeven and Rubio in 2022

McCain will be dead.

It takes 60 votes to stop a filibuster but that’s a senate rule that the senate majority can change any time they want to, as they did to confirm Grosuch to the Supreme Court.

They just need to go to majority rule for legislation, but the GOP won’t do it. It’s called shooting yourself in the foot in other parts of the country. In DC it’s called bipartisanship.

Yes, it makes no sense whatsoever. Trump needs to start a major campaign to end the filibuster. Most of his base would support him in doing so.

I agree with you completely. The national platform of the GOP is basically open borders and "free trade." Marco Rubio is a Republican. Donald Trump is not.

That's why Donald Trump -- not Marco Rubio -- is the President.

Can someone please explain why 60 votes are required?

It takes only 51 votes to pass a bill--if it comes up for a vote. Under Senate rules, a bill can't come up for a vote without 60 votes to end a filibuster.

That exchange was eye-opening. Rubio came across like he was mentally retarded.

The witch Collins is up in November of 2020, not 2022.

I wrote in someone else rather than vote for her in 2014.

I don't think that should be an arbitrary cap. That number should be driven by demand."

We, the native born citizens of these formerly United States DEMAND that you jackasses in the US Senate and House stop drowning us in immigrants.

How's that Marco?

Seems Marco is still pimping for his co-ethnics. Not enough Hispanics in the USA yet Marco? You toad.

It takes only 51 votes to pass a bill—if it comes up for a vote. Under Senate rules, a bill can't come up for a vote without 60 votes to end a filibuster.

I covered this many months ago. But FR folks continue to post inaccurate answers such as the prior. I will probably have to repeat the answer over the next couple years, until people learn.

60 Votes is a scam that gives significant advantage to the Democrat Party. Republicans follow along to remain in power as the minority party. The reason is thus ...

Look at the history of Congress going back 150 years.
Democrats FREQUENTLY surpass 60 votes.
Republicans RARELY surpass 60 votes.
The result is ever bigger Government by passing leftist laws more frequently.

60 vote is arbitrarily unfair.

This is why the U.S. Constitution ONLY requires a plurality, NOT a majority and especially NOT a high 60 vote super majority. 60 is UNFAIR and UNEQUAL as it creates a Socialist Society.

Unfortunately the average citizen person is numerically illiterate and must be told repeatedly.

Rules are not law, and statutory law is not Constitutional law. 60 is dangerous nonsense. 51 is also not required.
Only plurality is rightly required so that governing law changes every 2, 4 and 6 years, not decades. (c) TheNext

So the 60 votes is just a b.s. Senate rule and Yertle the Turtle could change the rules if he wanted to?
