If his car had just previously been surrounded and it was being pummeled by antifa rioters in the crowd, he may have panicked and attempted to lunge forward to get out of the crowd.
I fully agree, the miserable little Nazi should have walked, if he was indeed fleeing Antifa thugs. The video of him rear-ending the convertible shows a group just catching up with him armed with baseball bats and breaking his rear window. That's just before he goes into high-speed reverse.
However, it now seems the baseball bat guys were reacting, not acting. It appears the Nazi was not under attack when he set off down the street through the crowd ... at least, not if John Ziegler is accurate:

The driver now charged with murder was motoring around looking for the main crowd of protestors marching to the park and then when he found the head of their march he idled in a parking spot until he saw enough people to aim his vehicle at.
You can now safely discount any claims in the driver’s defense that he was under attack and panicked causing him to drive into the crowd. It’s a domestic terror attack. It is amazing that dozens weren’t killed.
