IIRC at least a couple of Lincoln’s advisers begged him to repatriate all the slaves to avoid the inevitable discord and threats by former masters when they were free. But to do so the North would have had to foot the bill for the effort which the public would have crucified him for. And it had taken the imminent threat of national extinction just to get the North to finally stop the slave empire in the first place.

In hindsight, however big of a logistical nightmare it would have been would have been worth it. We spent 100 years just getting sore losers in bedsheets to quit burning churches, lynching innocent people and making unjust laws. And even after all that effort...the outcome hasn’t been very good.
