Given that 2016 was the worst year for homicides in nearly two decades in Chicago, it comes as little surprise that the city has a reputation as one of the most violent places in the United States. Last year, there were 762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims with an average of 12 people shot every single day. In fact, the Windy City experienced more murders than New York and Los Angeles combined last year with the number of homicides there since 2001 eclipsing U.S. war dead in Iraq and Afghanistan by late November.
Even though it had more murders than any other U.S. city last year, is Chicago's violent reputation entirely justified? According to nonprofit news outlet The Trace, Chicago is actually far behind other major U.S. cities in homicides per 100,000 residents. It found that between 2010 and 2015, New Orleans had a homicide rate of 46.9 per 100,000 inhabitants compared to just 16.4 in Chicago. As bad a problem as Chicago has on its hands, this metric does show that many other cities actually have higher levels of violence.
Stockton has gotten really bad over the years.
Detroit: Michigan’s Mogadishu.
Run by Democrats?
Then why is Chicago always at the forefront of shooting news?
That’s the Politicaly Correct answer.
Give it some time.
Rat run governments. Rat Mayors.
no trend here!
Mayor of New Orleans: Democrat Mitch Landrieu: Son of former New Orleans mayor and Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development under Jimmie Carter, Moon Landrieu and the brother of the former U.S. Senator from Louisiana, Mary Landrieu.
Mayor of Detroit: Democrat Michael Duggan. He was Wayne County’s assistant corporation counsel. He was deputy County Executive from 1987 to 2001 under Edward H. McNamara, and was elected prosecutor in 2000.
Mayor of St. Louis: Democrat Lyda Krewson. Krewson took out a home equity loan to help an unsuccessful fight against Missouri’s concealed carry law. In 2011, she led the city’s successful effort to pass a smoking ban. She served as the chairman of the Ways & Means, Convention & Tourism, and Parks & Environment committees and the Chairman of the Board of Aldermen’s Transportation & Commerce Committee.
All three of these cities have had a long history of Democrat control.
In addition to the sunshine, that’s another reason to live in the West (if you can stomach the taxes and crappy liberal politics).
Look for Denver to work its way up. They have all the political pieces in place. A corrupt black mayor, his corrupt black police chief and a hard left city counsel.
I’ll bet if we really dig we’ll find they all have something in common. /s
Yes, but there are many dem controlled cities that are among the safest in the country.
Could there be some other factor that explains it?
How does Chicago make the news? Large population and large absolute number of deaths. If you put it by neighborhood it would be as bad as New Orleans in terms of where the deaths are happening.
The lower crime rate in the northern (white) suburbs of Chicago brings the average down, just not enough to escape the city appearing on this list.
Burlington VT, the two Portlands, Seattle, San Francisco, Madison WI and Boulder, CO are all run by socialists, too (as is Windsor, ON, same latitude/longitude and climate as Detroit).
Are you sure socialism is the problem?
Yep, they have the 3 political pieces under their control:
“They have all the political pieces in place. A corrupt black mayor, his corrupt black police chief and a hard left city council.”
Is their local media, print, tv and radio hard left?
A left wing media is necessary to hide the full blown violence and other law violations the big 3 collude in.
There's a tribe on the warpath, all right, but they aren't native. There's plenty of areas of that city that are no-go, which are overrun by the Dindu Nuffin tribe.
“Then why is Chicago always at the forefront of shooting news?”
Because Chi-Town is Obemba’s old stomping grounds and Rahm Emanuel, the mayor of Chi-Town, is Obemba’s lap dog. ;-)
This is where stats lie. A 100 mph wind is not twice as devastating as a 50 mph wind, it’s probably 10 times worse. If someone blows a .10 on breathalyzer, and and 2 hours later he blows a .20, is he twice as drunk? He’s probably 3 or 4 times drunker or more dangerous behind the wheel. In poker you have guys figuring up pot odds on whether or not make a call towards the end of huge multi-tournament tables like the WSoP, that’s stupid. I would argue that living within 2 miles of the 3,000 hard core gang-bangers in Chicago is more dangerous than living within 2 miles of the 300 hard core gang-bangers in Milwaukee. That is if you’re a law abiding citizen and such.
