The Food and Drug Administration is turning to a widely condemned narcotic in an effort to help people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The FDA has classified the noted party drug as a breakthrough therapy for patients.
The breakthrough designation isnt just a ceremonial title. The FDA will now fast-track the review of ecstasy as an approved treatment for PTSD. The pills, known by drug dealers and users as Molly, reportedly contain the chemical MDMA, which researchers believe is a key in treating the disorder.
According to reports, MDMA helps patients deal with traumatic memories by relieving some of the stress associated with the experience. PTSD typically surfaces when the patient is reminded of a painful memory.
The stress of recalling the event can lead to debilitating flashbacks, anxiety, or depression. The condition is commonly seen in military personnel who have been in combat.
The disabling element of PTSD is the fact that when the memory starts, the emotions completely override you and overwhelm the brain, said David Nutt of Imperial College London.
According to one study, 67 percent of patients who were given MDMA therapy had no signs of the illness after three treatments. Only a quarter of the patients receiving standard psychotherapy treatment for PTSD had the same results.
The Department of Veterans Affairs says seven to eight percent of the U.S. population will have PTSD at some point in their lives. The percentage is double among veterans who have served in recent conflicts in the Middle East, the Gulf, and Vietnam.
What was MDMA’s original medical use?
Was first created in 1912................
Does it work re my ex?
Is you ex a vet?..................
You know, I been feeling a little
stressed about my military days.
If I don’t get any Ecstasy, it
will surely get worse! Yeah,
that’s the ticket.
It's a breakthrough drug, but not a miracle drug...
And your glaucoma needs some cannabis.................
45 years ago we called it many, and I agree that shit can make anyone happy, at least as long as it lasts.
We called it mda. I hate autocorrect.
My friends: It is not legal anywhere IN THE WORLD. As a Libertarian I should have the right to try it at least once. My young nephew’s advice-listen-do it with your favorite chick.
If it helps these poor guys and gals with their PTSD, then God speed!...................
It should be OTC....................
It was initially used for marriage counseling and other similar things. I could easily see it being useful for such. The biggest problem with it, is that it is a major mood enhancer. If you’re in a good mood, you love every single blade of grass around you. If you’re mad, or feeling depressed, it will magnify those feelings as well.
PTSD? What if you don’t have it? We all have the right to take it up the ass. Doesn’t mean it’s illegal. One should not have to go to prison to try it out.
Will VA hospitals play a lot of techno dance music during therapy sessions?
They probably do that anyways...................
Cue veterans dancing to techno music.
If they get the unadulterated stuff, it will definitely help with the expression of feelings. Couldn’t hurt under supervision. Drink lots of water.
