South Korea says it has seen indications that the North is preparing more missile launches, possibly an intercontinental ballistic missile.
It said it was strengthening its controversial US-made Thaad missile defence system after the North's test of a nuclear bomb at the weekend.
The South has carried out live-fire exercises in response to the test.
The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting to discuss its response.
It last imposed sanctions in August, targeting North Korean exports.
Speaking before the meeting, the British ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, told reporters there were "further sectors of the economy which could be sanctioned" and more could be done to prevent the North Korean government exploiting North Korean labourers working in other countries.
The US has warned that any threat to itself or its allies will be met with a "massive military response".
The North says it tested a hydrogen bomb that could fit on to a long-range missile. Pyongyang has repeatedly defied UN sanctions and international pressure by developing nuclear weapons and testing missiles, and the provocations have only intensified.

If this goes thermonuclear with China, then be sure to thank the Clintons.
Why does he keep provoking the west to attack him?
If he wants it, then it is the one thing we shouldn’t do.
It’s possibly a set-up to give him an excuse to roll south into Seoul (if he thinks he has nothing to lose) and then hold Seoul hostage — thus insisting on reunification; or
maybe he is a cat’s paw for China/Russia, which will let N. Korea do their dirty work for them, wiping out our bases in Okinawa and Japan (at the very least) and leaving them masters of the Pacific.
You may assume he has been furnished the best Chinese/Russian technology to accomplish this.
In any case, prayers up for Trump, who has to make the decisions.
But still, Madeline enjoyed her dance with Kim.
I believe it was Condi Rice who first announced that NK had nukes....and had deceived the world.
“maybe he is a cats paw for China/Russia, which will let N. Korea do their dirty work for them, wiping out our bases in Okinawa and Japan (at the very least) and leaving them masters of the Pacific.”
I know we are being told China cannot control him, but my gut is telling me this is false...
I agree with your analysis. This is why I’m concerned with war with China.
Russia may secretly be on our side. They don’t like China.
So it could be us and the Russians vs. China and perhaps Iran?
World War III in other words.
Yep the filthy Clintons.
Madeline was getting all worked up saying the Dictator lover her legs. Even if true, it was simply astounding should we even say this vs. keeping it to herself.
Look to see who benefits from Kim’s actions.
That will tell you who is pulling his strings.
China.
Pull them out of the shadows and let them know what their puppetry can bring them.
“Ich see pedophilez!”
Yep, that’s Podesta in the back row...
CINC can force China to continue not doing anything until people start dying then close our ports to them. Then default on our debt and use asset forfeiture to seize their US holdings. Lots of pain awaits them if they don’t straighten up and fly right.
default on our debt and use asset forfeiture to seize their US holdings.

Yep, like the old axiom goes: “When you owe someone else a lot money, THEY have a big problem.”
Oh gee, that makes me feel so much better.
CINC has them checkmated. Their US RAT ‘advisors’ never relayed that DJT may push ALL the chips into the pile... they’re the ones stuck now.
So he’s irrational to the point of being suicidal, or he’s rational, and recognizes that he can take brinkmanship to a new level without personal consequence. Or, as you suggest, he’s just a proxy for Chinese global ambitions. All these alternatives assume he doesn’t give a quarter damn for the millions of emaciated Koreans under his thumb.
I imagine the Trump administration is testing plausible alternatives like these. Threaten China with economic ruin, and see if Kim backs down; that would test alternative 3. The threat has to be devastating, though, and he has to be willing to follow through with it.
Trump has a rare opportunity to accomplish two things if he plays his cards right: neutralize NK and checkmate China at the same time.
I for one think its very important to do this because Iran is shaping up to be our next big problem. We need to send them a strong and unmistakable message. Russia will be watching as well, and taking notes.
This is the big game. Trump probably recognizes this in all its dimensions and consequences. Time to flex our muscles.
North Korea: still not sick of winning.
And give India most favored nation status. Best would be to force China into such assholery that Americans boycott their crap without being asked. Probably our best opportunity to finally break all these slave shackles, in one fell swoop.
Big deal let them run out of missiles
Note that the it is the South Korean operated THAAD system that is refered to as ‘controversial’.
“maybe he is a cats paw for China/Russia, which will let N. Korea do their dirty work for them, wiping out our bases in Okinawa and Japan (at the very least) and leaving them masters of the Pacific.”
If the Norks were to drop a bomb on Japan , do you think the US would respond with “ fire and fury ...” ?
The Chinese and the Norks despise Japan . Japan is the closest target outside the Korean peninsula . An easy target even for NK .
I don’t think Trump / USA will preemptively attack NK . Trump needs a “ Pearl Harbor “-like incident in order to sell war to the public and to the world . Would an attack on Japan be enough to accomplish this ?
The incredible manufacturing capacity for Apple products would cease.
