The Day Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer Blinked
Vanity ^ | 9/7/2017 | LRoggy

Posted on 09/07/2017 3:39:25 AM PDT by LRoggy

Not that anyone in the LSM would get this, as well as some in the Establishment in D.C., but Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer blinked yesterday on raising the debt ceiling in order to give their support to Hurricane relief efforts.

How you ask?

Two words . . . Tax Reform.

For awhile now the trial balloons have been floating in the air about what the Trump Administration wants to see as the basic way to reform the system to push more tax relief to the middle class and corporations while not giving the upper levels of income a break on their effective rates. The main emphasis for how they would do this is to put a cap on things like state income tax deductions and mortgage interest deductions (I’m not sure about property tax deduction caps but that would fit in to this picture too).

The Establishment, used to seeing these types of proposals in the past get shot down, assumed the same for the latest effort, and basically did nothing to fight these initiatives publicly when they were floated.

But as the time went on a funny thing happened; the proposals have NOT gone away, and if anything, have become pretty much the center piece of the actual proposal. And the realization is starting to scare the heck out of Schumer and Pelosi.

After all, DJT is just dumb to them . . . but to those of us who voted for him . . . dumb as a fox.

This Tax Reform as currently proposed would substantially shift the tax burden from the wealthy in all of America to the wealthy in the Blue States . . . and Schumer and Pelosi are dawning on the realization that dumb DJT has completely painted them into a corner politically on the issue.

<-i>How do Democrats possibly fight a proposal that would be revenue neutral across the country at the higher levels of income while giving a corporate tax break that they are on video record supporting for a long time and not only being a cut for the middle class but also possibly combined with a major increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit (which by the way is what Milton Friedman advocated for many years) to raise the income levels of the lower educated without having to destroy their earning capability through ruinous minimum wage increases?

Then throw in what happens to property values in those Blue States! If I were a owner of suburban property in the Northeast or gilded California I'd be sweating right now. How many times have we heard from the sanctimonious among us like Warren Buffett and Valley executives about being willing to pay higher taxes (we'll put aside the hypocrisy of tax avoidance legend Buffett calling for this)? Here's their chance . . .

Just look at the commercials DJT could run! The Democrats support not raising the effective tax rate on Goldman partners in New York, the loud mouth know-it-alls in Hollywood and the young big mouths in Silicon Valley! The middle class family in Michigan no longer gets relief and the inner city poor loses out on an expanded income credit because we can’t give up our cherished state income tax deductions.

Yesterday was the first attempt by Pelosi and Schumer to try to stem the tide of what will likely be a Tax Reform approach that will be very popular with DJT voters. Find ways to build up some markers for negotiation on Tax Policy before it is too late.

It will be fun to watch the next few months to see what else they will blink on.

Spin alert! This is bs! It’s like schemer and Pelosi didn’t want to spend more taxpayer money. In truth, they decided they wanted more of your money and the only way to get more was to hold disaster funds hostage..
it worked! What a miracle that shumer and Pelosi get more taxpayer dollars!
Now every time they want more money, they know exactly how to get it.

Actually, the Republicans had a legislative burden lifted while there are other fish to fry. The status quo is maintained while the tax bill is in process during a short remaining legislative season.

Knee jerk reaction is foolish

"How do Democrats possibly fight a proposal...that they are on video record supporting for a long time..."

Easily, they just brazen it out.

That would be the wrong analysis of a Cruzlim. President Trump reached out to them after GOP leadership proved their ability to screw up dirt.

Interesting...a change like that would certainly hit the blue state elites right in their pocket book.

Ok.. it’s simple. Does this proposal spend more taxpayer dollars.. or less?
Before you answer how could it be less, let me explain. If the govt used existing funds for disaster relief, it isn’t really less in dollars, but it’s less in theory. See, there is already a budget for disaster spending. So this is pure politics. Magically, now they want to add to the disaster budget.
Now.. when have shumer and Pelosi been against increases government spending?
middle class America, screw you,we are taking more taxpayer dollars..nice deal, huh!

IIRC, Mnuchin was the first to propose this "friendly" outcome.

It's about getting it done.

FEMA needed to get their available dollars up to job at hand and the rest is for loans for the victims.

Kinda like you getting bread when you'[re down to two slices. No big deal. FEMA needs funds.

I don’t get down to two slices. I plan ahead. We pay billions of dollars for oodles of government employees to run FEMA and you’re telling me they wait until they are down to two slices of bread. And you are ok with that?
BS.. taxpayers just got screwed.
That’s the difference between a budget and a political taxpayer grab from the money machine.

They blinked only if signatures on legislation exist...commitments to future tax cuts are lies...democrats and rinos never keep promises.

I will trust Trump, unlike how some here have portrayed him as rolling over, but I hope i like what I see in coming months.

Having our party and dems working to stop him I’m not sure why some here criticise him so much. Could you backseat drivers be doing better with all his enemies?

And there’s a big difference between planning for a family and planning for a nation. Hell of a lot easier planning for the small unit. You sound like if you were planning building a church it would be the capacity of what Easter Sunday services would require instead of the other 364 days of the year.

You sound like the problem is that in PREVIOUS YEARS we didn’t OVER BUDGET FEMA. If the hurricanes didn’t hit would you be complaining about THAT overspending?

Your argument is way off base.

Your Vanity post is not news. Take it to a different channel.

Are you trying to explain multilevel its above our heads no one operates at this level chess? This is no grand plan and there is no win for anyone in the conservative camp. There is a win for Trump, today. But tax reform just got a lot harder. Now the debt ceiling will have to be raised again about the same time as Congress should be passing a tax bill. The Dems will have the GOP cornered.

The GOP would not give Trump “wins” so he will get them with the Dems. The next win will be when he renegotiates DACA with the Dems.

No one has ever stated that Pelosi and Schumer were the smartest people in Washington and it appears that Trump’s “moves” continue to show that over and over again.

"It's about getting it done."

Agreed. Trump is not and has never been a conservative ideologue. Results matter to the President, not adherence to so called GOPe principles.
