Inside Trump's head-scratching deal with "Chuck and Nancy"
Axios ^ | 9/7/17 | Mike Allen

Soak this in: It's now possible that Trump's biggest legislative wins this year will be more spending and raising the debt cap — the exact opposite of what Tea Party Republicans came to D.C. to do.

Trump "brazenly rolled his own party's leaders," as AP put it. Plus his own Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin — in front of leaders of both parties.

Why it matters: Tax reform is now less likely, with trust ruptured between Trump and Republican Hill leaders. Democrats are more likely to flip the House in 2018: Republicans have less than ever to show their voters.

A Democratic source tells us: "[T]he sequence was GOP pushing for 18-month debt [limit increase], then 12, then 6, then Trump cutting them off and agreeing with us on 3. ... The Oval Office spins fast in Trump's White House."

The debt ceiling is simply an accounting device that notes the spending congress already approved.

“Raising the debt limit” is entering the already approved spending figures into your books and starting to spend the money.

If you don’t raise the debt limit, 87% of that spending starts anyway as it’s classified as ‘essential’.

The entire debt limit show is just that, a show.

This comment is complete nonsense. The debt ceiling has nothing to do with hurricane spending.

Can the leadership be shamed into acting like Republicans/conservatives? Time will tell.

Probably not, but they can be replaced.

It’s very simple.

The places where Trump, Ryan and McConnell overlap ideologically are purely by accident.

And he personally hates Ryan and McConnell for being hicks from the sticks.

The places he overlaps ideologically with Chuck and Nancy actually make some sense.

(Note: on his truly core issues like the wall, he overlaps with none of these people).

More importantly, he likes Chuck and Nancy. Nancy is rich and keeps herself together for an old broad. Chuck is a smart-ass New Yorker from an outer borough. They are the exact kind of coastal elites that he’s been seeking approval from since the 70s.

Seriously, what the hell do Ryan and Trump talk about over dinner? The tax code? Subsidies to dairy farmers?

I imagine Chuck and Trump laughing about some corrupt judge who got taken out by a low-level Gambino in the early 80s and what corner has the best hot dog cart. They probably hate the same newspaper columnists and council members too.

So much of Trump’s negotiating style is based on personal relationships that this is inevitable.

They are going to cheer his single-payer plan as the best possible single-payer plan.

Like I know we hate Ryan and McConnell, but Good Lord, we are celebrating a deal with Pelosi. I don’t even know what to think at this point.

Exactly. Only time will tell, but would not be shocked if Trump helps knock off more than a few RINOs next primary season. Making only a short term “kick the can” deal fits, so does the 6 month DACA shutdown lead time.

If a RINO wants to prove otherwise, they’ll need to get their mind right very quickly.

Congressional GOP leaders wanted to reduce the leverage of the debt ceiling by extending it for 18 months. The 3 month deal brings it back up before the 2018 mid-terms.

This appears to be President Trump retaining election season leverage.

Also, the rupture in trust was not caused by the President. It is caused by the faithless and feckless GOP in congress.

Munchkin is a rino. Trump is wise to roll over him also. .

Mnuchin is the Treasury Secretary who represents the President , he's not out there offering independent proposals on legislative strategy.

Clearly the Trump administration (via Mnuchin) tried to put forward a strategy that tied Harvey relief together with the debt ceiling increase and when it looked like the GOP leadership was not going to play ball, Trump decided to cut a deal with the Democrats.

The notion that this means Mnuchin got rolled is absurd.

It’s interesting how people imprint their own values and aspirations onto political critters. I’ve seen many hang their hopes on Trump as as the “white hat” that comes riding in to save the day.

I’m more of a pragmatist who sees Trump as the Great Gamechanger - beholding to no one and coming in as the proverbial outsider. I expect to be disappointed by some of the things he will do but I’m already completely satisfied that he was the correct and only choice.

As for the rest of them...a pox upon their houses!

Your understanding of American politics in the 21st century is pathetic.

GREAT! Now the RINOs know Trump has additional options.

Now the Demoncrat leaders have something that can be taken away.

Do you ever allow the facts to get in the way of your opinions?

Life Long Democrat Untrue and Misleading.
Trump was a Democrat prior to 1987. In 1987, Trump registered as a Republican in Manhattan.

In 1999, Trump switched to the Reform Party and ran a presidential exploratory campaign for its nomination. After his run, Trump left the party in 2001 due to the involvement of David Duke, Pat Buchanan, and Lenora Fulani.

From 2001 to 2008, Trump identified himself as a Democrat, but in 2008, he endorsed Republican John McCain for President. In 2009, he officially changed his party registration to Republican. In December 2011, Trump became an independent for five months before returning to the Republican Party, where he later pledged to stay.

Big Government Liberal Another Lie which Anti Trump people have created from the thin soup of Donald Trump stating the NIH worked in Britain at that time but wouldn’t work for America and his statement that we need a saftey net because we can’t leave people to die on the street.

The characterization of this as Big Government is jaw dropping since we already have a saftey net, hospitals can’t refuse treatment etc. Also POTUS is cutting federal regulations hand over foot, eliminating federal positions, eliminating duplication, returning power to the States. His tenure is a sea change in reversing Big Government.

The only people who look ridiculous are the Never Trumpers who have to ignore the truth to avoid the embarassment of admitting to themselves they are wrong.

You and I are one on this.

The thing I like most about trump is his impact on the left. They are absolutely tripping all over each other to see which can destroy their reputation or out themself as a rabid communist (etc.) first.

And he new seems to be trying to do that to the RINO’s.

This is very, VERY risky, but since I don’t think we have anything to lose (i.e. we’re doomed if nothing changes), I’m enjoying this immensely.

This is why I moved to a farm in central KY from my home of 46 years, Seattle, back in 2011. And I bought it two weeks before the 2008 election so I could move there.

We’re as ready as an american citizen can be and stay within the confines of the law. Well, we do need to restock some chickens after that Fox fiasco.

Thanks, one other factor may be at work too, beyond softening up the Republican base to accept the impeachment of Trump (i.e., by the Republican leaders showing Trump to be ineffective and a nutcase).

Remember the articles regarding the 2020 election and how Republicans are making plans to Primary Trump. Well, for them to have any chance of defeating Trump, the base, again, will have to be softened up.

So it’s probably both at work for the Republican leadership...Impeach Trump as soon as possible, if at all politically possible - barring that, then Primary him out in 2020.

In any case it’s now the Republican leadership fighting for their political lives, not Trump.

Whoops.

Nice post.

Ryan and McConnell thought they had all the power.
That they had Trump boxed in.

Trump put a boot on their throats and showed it is he
that controls the power in DC.

I am listening to Ingraham. She says Ryan came out
a few minutes ago pushing Tax cuts.
Looks like Ryan got the message.
We will see about the Turdle.

More idiotic double talk from a never trumper.

His administration has been very conservative so far.

It is the House and Senate who are selling us out.
