NFL opening weekend sees more Star-Spangled Banner protests

Los Angeles (AFP) - Seattle's Michael Bennett and Oakland's Marshawn Lynch joined other NFL athletes Sunday in protesting the treatment of minorities by US law enforcement during the first weekend of the regular season.

Both Bennett and Lynch remained seated during The Star-Spangled Banner before the Seahawks and Raiders season-opening games as part of a continuing wave of protests that began last year with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Bennett sat as teammate Justin Britt stood next to him with his hand on his shoulder while another teammate, Thomas Rawls, stood on Bennett's other side before the game against the Green Bay Packers.

Bennett's brother, Martellus, who plays for the Packers, stood at the end of the Green Bay bench with his right fist in the air.

Two weeks ago, Bennett was detained on a Las Vegas street for about 10 minutes by police

Bennett has alleged that he had been the victim of racial discrimination after being threatened at gunpoint by the police. He said they "singled" him out for "nothing more than being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Police denied the charge and said Bennett was detained briefly because he was spotted running from the police before jumping over a wall. Bennett was handcuffed but police did not arrest or charge him.

Raiders runningback Lynch also sat during the anthem just like he did a number of times during the preseason. Lynch, unlike Bennett, has declined to discuss his reasons for doing so.

In Cleveland, players linked arms with police, military and firefighters during the anthem before the Browns' opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. No players knelt during the song.

Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and Los Angeles Rams linebacker Robert Quinn also raised their fists

I’ll stick to NASCAR where they say a prayer and sing the National Anthem before each race

I'll stick to the TV show Haunted Towns where they say a prayer before embarking on their night-time ghost hunting activities before I watch another NFL game. Not seen one NFL game this season so far, including the preseason games.

I protest the NFL so it evens out. “Entertainers” will get a business lesson.

I am surprised that the GB fans did not boo them out of the stadium. Then, again, Rodgers was supporting ck.
I know it has been said many times, but when I am on the clock, my boss determines if my actions are appropriate or not. If not, I get fired. Why are these team owners accepting their employees to behave this way? smfh

It’s gonna be a hoot when nfl (in-effer-hell) sportswriters and sportscasters begin losing their jobs because their audiences bailed on them. And it will be self-induced destruction because these putzes where the ones promoting the anti-American protestors.

Death.... to the nfl.

The NFL will soon stop raising the flag. Just wait. Maybe this season but definitely the start of next.

In three years, no one will remember there ever was a flag or anthem at games.

The NFL had a chance to stop this cold but decided not to. It is now a runaway problem for them. There may be a solution but so far nothing is happening so the losses will mount for them for now.

Too bad NASCAR is slowly dying. Its gone corporate, and all the personality has been taken out of it.

I boycotted the NFL last year and will do so again this year, as long as cheap partisan politics interfere with the game.
By boycotting the NFL I have become slimmer and no longer smell like stale beer.
The advertisers are losing their butts on this fiasco.

I’d rather have the NFL follow the example set by the Cowboys’ owner - strict discipline with respect to the anthem.

Even if it would result in Cleveland being unable to field a team.

as Rush was saying the NFL may just get rid of the National Anthem all together. I wouldn’t be surprised. It is a holdover from a different time and a different country. We’re an enlightened multi-nationalist socialist country now. :-)

“The NFL really has a death wish.”

The NFL is still around?
How quaint.
I thought it was gone years ago

You’d have to pay me to watch a professional sports game, and I mean a lot. Patriotism trumps sports.

Which of course was instantly proven to be a total crock.
