The SA was a kinder, gentler German outfit than the SS.

Was that meant to be sarcasm? From my reading, the Sturmabteilung was the base on which the Schutzstaffel was built. The SA were the common thugs, the bully boys which gave rise to the Nazis. The SA were the ones involved in Kristallnacht and the Nazi atrocities from 1920 until the Night of the Long Knives in 1934 when Roehm and his subordinate degenerates were destroyed and the SA brought into line under the SS.

Not much of a difference: like being beaten to death with a club as opposed to stabbed with a dagger.

The SA were mainly recruited from the ranks of the Communist street brawlers.
