Jury selection is expected to begin in the Kate Steinle murder case. Jose Ines Garcia-Zarate is expected back in court later today. He's charged with shooting and killing Steinle at a San Francisco Pier. Last week, the federal agent whose stolen gun was used in the shooting testified in a pre-trial hearing. The judge decided what questions can and cannot be asked of the agent during the trial.
public defender Matt Gonzalez showed tape in court of Garcia-Zarate’s initial interview with police, and featuring the interpreter who read him the translation of his Miranda rights, calling into question whether the translation used was correct.
Apparently, the interpreter did not read off the Miranda card precisely and instead something more closely translated as “You have a right to wait for silence” rather than “You have the right to remain silent.”
Details about the gun and how it ended up in Garcia-Zarate’s hands will be front and center in the defense’s case during trial, as has been revealed over the past few months. Gonzalez has already argued in a Chronicle op-ed that the gun used, a Sig Sauer .40 caliber automatic pistol that was stolen from a Bureau of Land Management agent’s vehicle, has a notorious hair trigger, and that the bullet that killed Steinle was shot out of the gun accidentally and ricocheted off the ground or another surface.

Sanctuary City Poster Boy.
The City Council of SF should be the defendants.
Residents of San Francisco, welcome him back to your streets or execute him.
I wonder if he was asked how it came to be, that his weapon was stolen?
He’s just stealing the weapons and shooting the Americans that Americans refuse to do. Or something.
I’m not sure what the Cheap Labor Express / NWO phrase for this week is.
I am sure that is true, but I still want to know how he let his weapon get stolen. Regardless of the answer, I am pretty sure the Feds will cover it up.
What model of SIG has a hair trigger? That is a new one. Maybe compared to a HiPoint; which kind of makes sense when you consider the person pulling the trigger. For non-gun people: HiPoint weapons are very inexpensive but very reliable.
I begin to wonder these days if it’s no big deal when an officer or agent loses or has their weapon stolen.
His entire defense is baloney. I don’t believe a word that comes out of his lawyer’s mouth.
Well, yeah, he’s here illegally, stole the gun, but it must be the gun’s fault.
This happened two friggen years ago. Whatever happened to a speedy trial?
Maybe it just depends on who loses the weapon. I knew an Army officer in Germany. One of his troops lost an M-16 while out in the field. The dude got court martialed.
Whether it was true or not, we always perceived it was different spanks, for different ranks, that if a high ranking officer lost a weapon, it would have been handled differently. Maybe this federal agent was a classic case of just exactly that.
You or I would be in prison if we allowed a gun to be stolen in CA that was later used in a crime.
BLM cop needs to go to prison.
I think so too. Now, if the dude was required to attend some function, where he couldn't take his weapon, he should have called his boss, and said he wasn't going anywhere without his weapon.
