Armed LGBT student Scout Schultz shot dead by Atlanta police

Police in the US state of Georgia have shot and killed an LGBT student activist, leading to an independent investigation. Police encountered Scout Schultz at a campus in Atlanta after a call about "a person with a knife and a gun" late on Saturday, officials say. Footage has emerged apparently showing Schultz, 21, refusing to obey multiple police commands to drop a knife. Schultz's mother said police should not have used lethal force. In a video filmed by fellow students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Schultz is heard saying "Shoot me!" while continuing to advance on the officers. One of them then opens fire. Schultz - who identified as neither male nor female - did not appear to be holding a gun, investigators said, despite what was initially reported to police.

The computer engineering student later died in hospital, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. No police officers from the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) were injured in the incident. The officer who opened fire has not been named. Schultz's mother Lynne later said Scout, who was born Scott Schultz, was politically active in progressive causes, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She added that Schultz had numerous medical issues, suffered from depression and had attempted suicide two years ago. "Why didn't they use some nonlethal force, like pepper spray or Tasers?" she was quoted as saying by the newspaper. Schultz was the president of the Pride Alliance at Georgia Tech. "We are all deeply saddened by what has occurred," the group said in a statement. "They have been the driving force behind Pride Alliance for the past two years," the group said, using Schultz's preferred pronoun. "They pushed us to do more events and a larger variety events."

Mentally ill people should not be allowed to have firearms.

I'm glad the person calling police didn't do something rude . . . like assume this LGBT activist's gender in the call.

"Why didn't they use some nonlethal force, like pepper spray or Tasers?"

Why didn't you use parenting skills like discipline and teaching respect for authority?

I expect I know more about law than you do. Go around shooting folks in the foot, and have a good bankruptcy lawyer on call. Although if you are going to a knife fight with a foot shooting pellet gun, on second thought, have a good surgeon and a better undertaker on call.

but if she knew he had serious problems and did nothing, she is negligent.

BUT ? How could she not know ?

Where did he learn/get this behavior ?

Poor sick individual. His parents should have seeked help before it was too late. Now they want to blame the Police for the death of their obviously disturbed son.

“They” meaning “he”. Maybe he heard voices or thought he was more than one person.

This is sick crap. I read another article yesterday; he was the one who called in and claimed there was someone with a knife and gun.

Obviously his mental illness which caused his sexual craziness also caused him to commit suicide by cop, which is a chickens*** way to go. Cruel to involve others. He should have just offed himself responsibly, if he was determined to do it.

And another person with mental disorders, who was improperly treated thanks to the APA insistance on MALPRACTICE AND POLITICS over truly helping....

Sorry folks, sexual mental disorders, are STILL mental disorders, trying to treat them as “civil rights” issue, just denies the problem.

Please tell me what other delusion you could walk into a psychiatrists office claiming to suffer from, that was in complete contrast with factual reality, and they would say, you know what, you are right...and pander to it?

By refusing to help these people come to terms with factual reality, is malpractice and cruelty,. Just because their disorder manifests itself in sexuality, the APA refuses to do their job!

Challenging a man with a gun pointed at you to “SHOOT YOU” is a good way to get your wish...

But I agree, given the guy clearly had at least one mental disorder, based on what little info is in this article only, I am prone to believe this was likely a suicide by cop.

If only gay marriage was legalized, this wouldn’t happen.

I agree with you, but empathy and “police attitude” among some, are two very different subjects. Empathy in my opinion is trained out, and from what I see, there is too much emphasis on the police solution rather than how to avoid the fatal confrontation especially with the mentally ill who are unlikely to respond rationally to police commands/demands.
