Penny Chenery, who took over her fathers thoroughbred farm with little knowledge of horse racing and became one of the few prominent women in the sport as the owner and breeder of Secretariat, perhaps the fastest horse who ever raced, died on Saturday at her home in Boulder, Colo. She was 95.
Her death was announced by her family.
When Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes in 1973, capturing the Belmont by an astounding 31 lengths, he was a national celebrity. He appeared on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated and attracted thousands of fan letters.

Sorry to hear of this. RIP. Secretariat was a great champion. Sorry he died young.
RIP Penny, at 95 you've had a good run too!
Yes. I’m not a big movie watcher, but I watched “Secretariat” several times. It’s a great movie. And it’s a real feel-good movie, too.
I loved the movie and her story. Wish I could find it in widescreen.
RIP.
Aw, Penny. Hope she and Big Red had a joyful reunion.
I still get chills with
“He is moving like a tremendous machine!!”
I will always remember the magical time of Secretarial capturing the first Triple Crown in 25 years. RIP Miss Chenery
One of my favorite movies.
I never tire of watching the Belmont run...
Simply amazing...
I read her obituary yesterday. I was shocked when it revealed she had an affair with the trainer Lucien, played by John Malkovich.
The movie was good. The actual race was better. One thing to add: Sham was actually one of the greatest race horses of all time.
I’ve gotta go, so I can only post the url of the race:
If not for Secretariat, Sham would have won the Triple Crown that year. He would not have petered out in dueling Secretariat.
Kept the $2.00 to win ticket from the the Derby.
Always kinda felt sorry for Sham who would have been
a Triple Crown winner if Secretariat hadn`t come along.
RIP penny
Horse players gotta horseplay.
What a crock !
I guess you think Angle Light should be in the Hall of Fame.

its a fantastic movie and it was great they stuck her in there...a few years ago when American Pharoah won the triple crown bob baffert was walking towards the winners circle and he stopped as she was in the crowd...
Rest in peace, Penny! I bet Big Red was there to meet you at The Pearly Gate, what a reunion that must’ve been!!!!!
Yes, Secretariat is a wonderful film..the real Penny Chenery can be seen standing behind Diane Lane at the Belmont scene.
