Prior to 1973 no horse had run a faster Kentucky Derby or Preakness than Sham ran that year. Until very recently none had done so since 1973. The same was true in the Belmont until Sham faded under the incredible pace. I repeat: Sham was one of the greatest race horses of all time.

Gotta go.

Secretariat’s death proved that even oat bran has its limits. :)

My wife and I were in Toronto for a weekend getaway and at breakfast on Sunday morning I was reading the paper and told her we were going to the races that afternoon. We saw Secretariats last race.

And yes, I still have the program and a couple of winning tickets.

oh wow. Makes sense though since she wasn’t home much during the training unless it happened afterwards?

Yes, I agree with you.
She was a classy lady and she enjoyed a good, rich life.
God bless her and Secretariat.

Watched him win all three races (on TV). Just glad I can say I saw him do it. What a thrill.

I've always wanted to see this movie, it's on my top playlists. I'll get around to it because I heard it was good.

And yes, IMO Secretariat was the greatest racehorse of all time. Even though I was 8 months old when he ran :-)

Sham won five races in 13 starts. One of those wins (SA Derby) was tainted as his stablemate fouled Sham's principal contender.

Losing to Secretariat is no shame, but Sham has five other losses on his chart with only one other Stakes win besides the tainted SA Derby.

A pretty thin record for a horse to be considered "one of the greatest race horses of all time." There are over 100 horses that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame (in Saratoga Springs, NY). Sham is not one of them.

And if Secretariat wasn’t running that year, Sham would probably have won 8 out of 15 and perhaps still be the record holder in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. I hold to my position.

Rather, 8 out of 13.
