Pittsburgh Penguins will visit President Trump, attend White House Stanley Cup celebration
https://www.washingtonpost.com ^ | September 24, 2017 | Jesse Dougherty

While the sports world focused Sunday on the NFL and its reaction to incendiary recent statements by President Trump, the Pittsburgh Penguins inserted themselves into the sporting world’s ongoing political discussion by issuing a statement that the team would visit the White House as part of their Stanley Cup celebration.

The Penguins, on the heels of their second consecutive Stanley Cup win this past June, still plan to visit President Trump, though a date has not yet been confirmed. The Penguins released the statement at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, right as a handful of professional athletes and owners continue to denounce recent comments and tweets Trump has issued regarding the NFL, national anthem protests and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry’s now-rescinded invitation to visit the White House with his team.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins respect the institution of the Office of the President, and the long tradition of championship teams visiting the White House,” the Penguins’ statement reads. “We attended White House ceremonies after previous championships — touring the historic building and visiting briefly with Presidents George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama — and have accepted an invitation to attend again this year.

“Any agreement or disagreement with a president’s politics, policies or agenda can be expressed in other ways. However, we very much respect the rights of other individuals and groups to express themselves as they see fit.”

Hockey used to be terrible to watch on TV. But the advent of widescreen HDTV solved that problem--hockey games on NBC and NBCSN actually look good and with the widescreen, I can actually see the tactics used by NHL coaches in terms of player placement and movement.

Can't see many NHL players "kneeling" for the Canadian *or* American National Anthems.

I do wonder what Suban might do.

There are easily more Canadians tham Americans on the Penguins. So the Canadians are more respectful of American institutions than the Americans!

BTW, California (Golden State) is going Dem in 2020 regardless, but Pennsylvania is crucial for re-election. I guess Trump should root for Cleveland to win the World Series.

Rooney writes the paychecks. They are big Democrats who donate money to the party. They loved Obama.

How much money does Rooney donate to the GOP?

GO KINGS GO!

Repeat on the "Go Kings Go!"

When I hung my Yellow and Purple Kings pennant at work when the Kings won the Cup the first time, a Canadian co-coworker told me he liked my retro pennant. I let him know that pennant was not retro, it is original. I've been waiting a LONG time. I still have it out against Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden from the Norris Division days in the '70s.

Long live the Triple Crown! (Dionne-Simmer-Taylor) Long live Rogie Vachon!

Didn't Fox try something with having the puck highlighted on TV?

They not only highlighted the puck but had the computer place a "comet tail" on the thing. The tail became longer the faster the puck moved. It was really annoying and even more so during slap shots.

HD TV has pretty much solved the problem of not seeing the puck.

Like many NHL teams they probanly have lots more players who are not Americams so this is very meaningfully. They appreciate what Amsrica gives them.

I remember that and here is some footage from that experiment. It was ridiculed at the time but I thought it had potential. Remember, this was over 20 years ago. I'm sure technology has improved to where it can be done not so "cartoonish."

My suggestion is to enlarge the puck and keep it a constant reddish or blueish color while saving the blue and red "streaks" for instant replays.

Anyway, I haven't watched hockey on TV in ages so maybe it looks better on the high res TVs.

#17 absolutely 100% agree. They may be going to the White House, but they got their dig in, anyway.

Good for these REAL MEN

It should be noted that less than half of the team are Americans...(and no BLMers) as is the entire NHL.

With that being said, the crap most NHL players have to endure before they make it to the NHL makes the NFL players look like the coddled elitists that they are.

Approximately 12 years ago Red Wings star Chris Chelios's brother Steve moved here to Michigan from California and rented the house behind me. He shared a lot of insight into what he and his brother had to deal with because of parents who wanted them to become NHL stars. Most notably being shipped off to Canada as teenagers and fostered by Canadian families while they played junior hockey and went to school......hockey first.

Mainly because the NHL isn’t populated by players who would otherwise be slinging dope and shooting each other to control street corners, unlike the NFL and NBA players.

if the league had just one a-hole who disrespected either flags and anthems,it would be scandalous.

Agreed! Main reason is that the arena of action is much smaller and the fans are right there at the glass, within throwing distance anything a fan might want to throw at someone disrespecting the anthem.

Not only that but hockey is also a game of direct retribution for any wrong doings by a player. Either in that game or in the future.

The greatest hockey fight ever..............

Greatest Hockey brawl ever

It should be mentioned that the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup only to be devastated by the limousine accident six days later that resulted in Vladimir (The Gladiator) Konstantinov suffering serious brain injury and paralysis and has never been able to fully function since.........

As a Red Wing fan, thoughts of him still bring tears to my eyes.......
