Trump’s Katrina? Influx of Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria could tip Florida toward Democrats.
WaPo ^ | September 28, 2017 | James Hohmann

...it could be quite politically significant that tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans, maybe more, are expected to permanently move into Florida as the result of Hurricane Maria.

Their citizenship entitles them to vote, and they tend to overwhelmingly support Democratic candidates.

Florida-based Republican operative Rick Wilson thinks the hurricane might be a game changer. “If you put an influx of 100,000 Puerto Ricans who vote Democratic eight times out of 10 in the Orlando area, there you go,” he said. “Nobody can afford a big change in the registration pattern or a change in the voting pattern that offsets Florida’s narrowness. You could end up with a big advantage for Democrats in 2018 if they play it right. The Puerto Ricans would be coming here because they feel like Donald Trump left them high and dry. That won’t fade away. … It could be a very, very big deal.”

-- The number of people of Puerto Rican origin living in Florida already surpassed 1 million in 2015, which is more than double what it was in 2000. Cuban Americans now represent less than one-third of Florida’s eligible Hispanic voters.

A deep recession on the island, combined with a crime wave, caused an exodus to Florida. Puerto Rico’s population declined by 7 percent from 2010 to 2015, or roughly 300,000 people. The island’s government, saddled with $73 billion in debt, declared bankruptcy in May. Maria may supercharge these long-term trends and prompt many who had been trying to hold on to finally give up and flee.

They have primarily settled in the Orlando metropolitan area, which is part of the pivotal Interstate 4 corridor.

Aren’t there concerns that the lower half may snap off and capsize if too many show up?

Gratitude is a noble impulse, uncommonly found in those predisposed to leftism.

That’s what I was thinking. President Trump has shown them a lot more compassion and concrete help than any Democrat promises have brought.

Wishful thinking from WaPo...............

They make an assertion, then contradict their own assertion:

“- The number of people of Puerto Rican origin living in Florida already surpassed 1 million in 2015, which is more than double what it was in 2000” and Hilliary still lost.

“A deep recession on the island, combined with a crime wave, caused an exodus to Florida.”....Puerto Rico has been Democrat run for decades........

Adding fake news to the keywords...

1. Washington Post. Need I say more?

2. I will say more. “Trump’s Katrina”? Really? Using a false narrative that assumed Bush was at fault for anything before, during or after Katrina? Then using that lie as a basis to blame Pres. Trump in some way now?

Only the idiots at the Compost could be so stupid.

Or they might remember who came to help.

The gop-e gave amnesty to 3 million hispances in 1986. In reality it granted citizenship to close to an estimated 15 million when you consider how families were allowed to "reunify".

1988 was the last time California voted for a gop presidential candidate.

Prior to that, since 1956 CA was reliably Republican with 1964 being the exception.

The PR’s are mostly up in Orlando, but they far outnumber the Cubans now, although the Cubans have the $$$ influence from their commercial success and own Miami-Dade, except the Beaches, I guess. I haven’t lived there in 35 years when my daughter was born in Broward Co. and I commuted to Hialeah where I supervised 20 wonderful Cuban-American women in a corporate leasing accounting dept. who personally or whose parents escaped Castro.

Indeed they don’t - wife’s family is Cuban.

Some think that just because they have ties to island living that they’d have a lot in common. The two cultures share the same gutter-spanish dialect and that’s about it.
