Funny... I don't remember hearing about that in Ken Burns exhaustive historical documentary about Vietnam?
The above is quoted from "The Russian Revolution" by Alan Moorehead 1958.
Sounds awfully damn familiar.
Well observed. Please see my #22 post.
“No, 1968 was far worse.”
I think that’s true in substance - but the hyperbole of the unhinged left today is unprecedented in modern history.
The willingness of the MSM to give up even the pretense of objectivity and to unashamedly embrace utter lies and double standards - is just mind boggling.
And there is a vocal element in the leftist public that eats it up, unaware of how foolish they appear.
I’m hoping it’s like a death rattle - they have swallowed the poison pill of dishonesty and fake narratives - they are already the walking dead but just don’t know it.
They are absolutely sure Trump will be impeached any day now and that false hope is their life’s blood. Every day that goes by and Trump is not impeached leaves them all the more confused, desperate and loud.
One can hope, right?
Much worse today.
In the 60’s, almost everyone genuinely loved and respected the USA despite political, economic and social differences. We had that base value in common.
In 2017, the social and economic divides remain, our culture has degenerated into total debauchery and close to half the population hates the country. The two groups have virtually nothing in common other than the fact that each hates the other.
Of course, think of it this way:
One key mantra of the 60’s Left was “Question Authority.”
Now they’ve grown up and the Liberal Graybeards ARE THE AUTHORITY. They don’t want YOU to Question Authority at all.
“Weve been in a cold civil war for at least 8 years. And its getting progressively worse.”
Spot on.
I’ve said before -
A society **without rules** (call it a social contract if you will) is not a working society. Nor, is that ever to become one. Having rules and following same is what makes a rabble into a ‘culture’.
We currently have lots of rules, laws and yet we still are seeing things breaking down in areas (inner city)
I would add that if any “culture” (or society) that the person resides in openly accepts crime, rampart illegitimacy and drug dealing, for example, as a normal way of living, then that culture is past broken or dysfunctional.
That society is, in fact, engaged in constant, low order warfare against the larger, rule based participative society from which it is subtended. In this context, riots are just a spike in the ongoing and constant warfare with the larger whole.
So - to my earlier point - the ‘breakdown’ is less a rejection of the rules/laws and more like open warfare against the greater whole of the working parts of our Society.....
How long would the ‘inner-city’ and their related absolute dependency on others outside of the AO last without massive tax spending for water, sewer, electric and food/water or housing? I dare say the shelf life of those areas would be measured in hours. Witness: New Orleans before the hurricane...
^^This^^
In fact, I think it's correct to say the other side in many ways, has power; now it's being threatened in a very real and substantial way and there will be no peaceful surrendering of it.
“The 2000 election was “contested”, this one was not.”
300+ EVs = blowout. Eat that RATS.
“Not in any serious manner anyway, the rats have lost the ability to accept a GOP win, a rat hasn’t conceded on election night since Dukakis.”
EXCELLENT STAT, Impy!!!
Patience the left isn’t finished with their violence. I have maintained with the traitorous deep state Trump has been in danger from the moment he announced his candidacy.
The corrupt and incompetent establishment is worried its cushy play house is about to be torn down and the radical left which is essentially the entire left is hellbent on power and they have never backed away from violence. 1968 it isn’t-—yet.
To be fair though, I've seen numerous "Tea Party" groups behave the same way. They put up some crappy candidate who runs a terrible campaign and doesn't even come close to defeating a powerful GOP incumbent. Their reaction is to cry that the election was "rigged", rather than admit "hmmm, maybe we should have run a credible, likeable person and not some unqualified obnoxious blowhard"
Victor missed a few things. The narrow miss with AlGore and the bitter divide that happened there when Bush was elected (or as the leftists lie and say “selected, not elected”) and the much wider miss with Lurch. What was also missed was the near election of a man who was put in solely to eliminate Bush Sr.’s chances and then later, BobDole’s chances. Clinton never pulled more than 50%, ever.
So, we’ve had a lot of political chaos, including the country having the worst terrorist attack ever on 9/11 and then the riots and massive protests in the streets against the Iraq and Afghanistan actions, which were legal and authorized by congress.
It’s been bitter for a long time.
Seriously, I can still see Cronkite's visage on TV solemnly intoning, "The only way out of this war is a negotiated settlement!", even as SVA and US Marines were kicking NVA butt up and down the coast (this was during the first Tet offensive).
Of course, it was a different world back then, when we trusted everybody with everything. We were, of course, aware of the Red Menace, but nobody really thought they'd infiltrated anything of note, let alone a major TV network.
Back in the early 60's, when I was real young lad (!), I remember I'd watch "Eyewitness To History" on CBS, telecast every Friday night, at 10:00 PM, EST, with my parents.
This show had a decidedly leftist bent, although I had no comprehension of what that really meant, or it's implications.
As an example, they ran one episode (they may have run more that I wasn't familiar with/hadn't seen) touting the new emerging African states that were ripe with ferment, featuring such august names as Kwame Nkrumah, Moise Tshombe, Joseph Kasavubu, and Patrice Lamumba.
The entire show they were extolling all the great possibilities for these countries if only these guys could hold sway and ascend to power.
No mention was ever made of Communism or socialism, or what would probably happen to those countries if they did get power.
No mention was ever made of just what a dark side these guys, and others like him, had. They may have labeled them as innocent agrarian reformers, but frankly, if they did, it escapes me some 55 years later.
At the time I did not know, or really care, about the nascent culture wars, but I learned soon enough.
It's still amazing - this shit, staring people right in the face, flaunting this dangerous and pernicious ideology for decades - and people still don't see it.
None so blind as those who will not see.
CA....
But people are used to that divide now.
We may not like the changes that have gone on recently, but they didn't blindside most people the way the changes 50 years ago did.
If you follow TV and the Internet you've seen it coming. That wasn't the case for our parents or grandparents.
bkmk
“..It’s 1968 All Over Again...”
Well, Hippies... if it IS...
We’ll settle it properly THIS time.
Count on it.

None so blind as those who will not see.
Definitely agree. My 20-something nieces and nephews were all about Bernie. When I ask them why? It was "Free College, free pot, monthly living stipend, etc..." They have no freaking clue about how the real world works... and thus, little hope of improving their barely-above-minimum wage existence.
It breaks my heart. But, what can I do? I'm just the "crazy old conservative uncle".... who works hard, has a big house, nice car, and kids with degrees and no college debt. What do I know about how to make a living in today's USA?
