It's 1968 All Over Again
Townhall.com ^ | October 11, 2017 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/12/2017 5:19:24 AM PDT by Kaslin

Almost a half-century ago, in 1968, the United States seemed to be falling apart.

The Vietnam War, a bitter and close presidential election, antiwar protests, racial riots, political assassinations, terrorism and a recession looming on the horizon left the country divided between a loud radical minority and a silent conservative majority.

The United States avoided a civil war. But America suffered a collective psychological depression, civil unrest, defeat in Vietnam and assorted disasters for the next decade -- until the election of a once-polarizing Ronald Reagan ushered in five consecutive presidential terms of relative bipartisan calm and prosperity from 1981 to 2001.

It appears as if 2017 might be another 1968. Recent traumatic hurricanes seem to reflect the country's human turmoil.

After the polarizing Obama presidency and the contested election of Donald Trump, the country is once again split in two.

But this time the divide is far deeper, both ideologically and geographically -- and more 50/50, with the two liberal coasts pitted against red-state America in between.

Century-old mute stone statues are torn down in the dead of night, apparently on the theory that by attacking the Confederate dead, the lives of the living might improve.

All the old standbys of American life seem to be eroding. The National Football League is imploding as it devolves into a political circus. Multimillionaire players refuse to stand for the national anthem, turning off millions of fans whose former loyalties paid their salaries.

Same perps.

Lucky for us some of those dyed in the wool commies of 49 years ago are dropping every day (such as the Marxist founder of NOW).

Yet for all the social instability and media hysteria, life in the United States quietly seems to be getting better. The economy is growing. Unemployment and inflation remain low. The stock market and middle-class incomes are up. Business and consumer confidence are high. Corporate profits are up. Energy production has expanded. The border with Mexico is being enforced.

Yes, VDH, but WHY are all these good things happening? Just say it already.

Much, much worse now than in 1968...not even remotely close.

There is a divide now that the nation has not seen since the first civil war. What is worse is the absolute delusional state of the peasant class democrats and the anger and hatred they see the with. Those are reminiscent of the early stages of Nazi’s and Communists where even families were torn apart.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I have liberal relatives who graduated from Kent State in 1969 and we haven’t talked about the election at all. I was thinking about what I would say to them about my support for Trump and the biggest thing that came to mind was that I now understood how they felt in the 60’s, just that the shoe is on the other foot. THEY’RE the establishment and we are the insurgents.

And the Left has NO IDEA how to handle this. Except to try the same tactics against us that was used against African-Americans’s in the early to mid 60’s. Suppress and play to the worst fears of those in power. And they will surely lose just like those who were over the top against civil rights back then.

I have to admit I am enjoying immensely all of the Trump insurgency, and that is how we should market ourselves. We won’t win all the battles, we have to put up with a few things that make us cringe, but we get to have all the fun this time around.

To steal a saying . . . Keep Our Eyes On The Prize!

1968 merely sowed the seeds which have since grown to what we have today.

Exactly. And hows about calling out your colleagues in the media out for politicizing EVERYTHING and functioning as the communication wing of the democratic party, eh Victor? They media live to divide and denigrate the right and they want us dead.

Exactly. The leftists have meaningless hedonism and identity politics that defy rationality.

The insurgents (us) have God, Country, and Western Civilization. What prompts a leftist to fight? Only lies about other leftists labled as “the far right”.

Their whole system has been based on lies and smoke and mirrors (how can we fool them today!) and now it is being exposed.

It’s nowhere near as bad now as it was in 1968. The biggest difference is that no one is being drafted to fight in the ugly unsuccessful Vietnam war.

Regarding race relations, there is so much welfare now with ghetto dwellers being placated with free food, free health care, free cell phones and easy access to cannabis. Plus race relations have improved enormously. Blacks and other minorities are protected classes with easier access to job and educational opportunities that have allowed a growing middle class of minority citizens.

Yeah, there are anarchists, especially groups like Antifa and BLM, but any support they have now will diminish over time.

No, 1968 was far worse.

**No, 1968 was far worse.**

Add to the mix the assassination of Martin Luther King, and the murder of Bobby Kennedy by a Palestinian immigrant. Nixon probably would never have been President.

Then there is Walter Cronkite single handed giving South Vietnam to the North with his “We can’t win this war!” statement when the North Vietnamese were planning to ask for peace terms.

After the polarizing Obama presidency and the contested election of Donald Trump,

The 2000 election was "contested", this one was not. Not in any serious manner anyway, the rats have lost the ability to accept a GOP win, a rat hasn't conceded on election night since Dukakis.

Recent immigrants, both legal and illegal are a major problem and the cause for dissension with law and order. Many of the legal aliens support the illegal aliens.

Everybody is going to support their friends, even if they are illegal and in California where 48 percent of students in public schools are recent immigrants, everybody has immigrant friends.

The Center for Immigration Studies found that 93 percent of our children are born to immigrants.
https://cis.org/Report/Mapping-Impact-Immigration-Public-Schools

So when Americans decided they had had enough and voted for President Trump, we had a built in opposition.

Alliance of Youth Movement Speech
Hillary and Obama use Youtube, Facebook and Twitter to kill people

U.S. Department of State
Published on Oct 16, 2009

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton records a video message for participants of the Alliance of Youth Movements Summit in Mexico City, Mexico October 16, 2009. Go to http://www.state.gov/video for more video and text transcript.

I want to congratulate all of you that have come to Mexico City in person and online to be part of this ground breaking summit. You are the vanguard of a rising generation of citizen activists who are using the latest technological tools to catalyze change, build a movement and transform lives and I hope this conference provides an opportunity for you to learn from each other and discover the tools and techniques that will open new doors for activism and empowerment when you return home.

All over the world young people like you are driving progress. In Columbia two young college graduates fed up with violence in their country used Facebook to organize 14 million people into the largest anti-terrorism demonstration in history. In Iran we saw young people using Twitter and Youtube to communicate with each other and the world. Despite a government crackdown designed to keep them quiet. In India a 14 year old high school student from Mumbai used social networking to link together half a million people that sought solidarity and support in the aftermath of the November 2008 terrorist attack.

You have all traveled … paths to get here today, you come from different cultures and countries and speak different languages but you all share a common commitment to engaging with the world using every tool at your disposal to bring people together to solve problems. And that makes you the kind of leader we need.

As we work to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the 21 century, government can’t do it alone, citizens organizations, businesses, universities everyone with a stake in our shared future must take responsibilities for shaping it. That’s what we call 21st century statecraft. So thank you for being on the front line of progress and I can’t wait to see what all of you do next.

President Obama has created an organization called Organizing for Action. https://www.ofa.us/

Hello Democrats
After the primaries we came together as a primary to write the most progressive platform in history. Ideas we championed are now inspiring leaders and activists across our country. Nearly 66 million votes are fueling grass roots energy and activism and everywhere people are marching, protesting, tweeting, speaking out and working for an America that’s hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.

From the Women’s March to airports where communities are welcoming immigrants, refugees and people of every faith, to town hall meetings where people are speaking up for healthcare, the environment, good jobs and all the other issues that deserve our passionate support.

You can’t justify killing 500,000 people. This was not a part of the war on terror. Hillary and Obama are evil, maniacal and if you, the reader, can somehow justify supporting these two people, there is something seriously wrong with you.

That’s how I see it. There is technically less violence so far, compared to 1968, but the divide today reminds me more of the divide just before the Civil War. We’ve been in a “cold” civil war for at least 8 years. And it’s getting progressively worse.

Since I was college-aged in the 60s, younger folks ask me if the 60s were worse than what we are seeing now. And I have to answer “no”. This is much worse. Most of the problems we saw in the 60s were caused by people who may have had the power to burn down their neighborhoods, but they weren’t the ones in charge. No major political party backed the rioters and claimed it wasn’t riot but “revolution” or “insurrection”.

Fact is, a lot of the rioters/hippies from the 60s are now in positions of power—in Congress, the courts, academia. The “other side” has a chance to win power this time. Just look at the bullet we dodged in 2016.
