Breaking barriers, Arab-Israeli women join movement to 'wage peace'

PATH TO PEACE   Frustrated with the peace process, more Arab-Israeli women are joining the ranks of Women Wage Pace, rejecting pressure not to 'normalize' relations with Israeli Jews. 'We want, in our own way, to make peace,' says one member.

AKKO, ISRAEL—Sitting in the corner of a café in this compact Mediterranean port that is home to both Jews and Arabs, Ghadir Hani describes her frustration with the inertia of Israeli and Palestinian political leaders that led her to become a peace activist.

Nearby, against a backdrop of minarets and stone walls, fishing boats bob in Akko’s ancient harbor, which has borne witness to wars and battles from the time of the Romans, Crusaders, and Napoleon, and up to the 1948 Middle East conflict around the founding of the modern Jewish state of Israel.

“I was born in Akko, a mixed city, and I grew up on the values of accepting others,” she says. “We are all human beings. We cry when someone is killed on the ‘other’ side, but for so long have felt like there is nothing we can do.

“But we want, in our own way, to make peace,” she continues. “As a part of Arab society, I have a feeling we can be a bridge between Palestinians and Jews since we are also Palestinians, but also citizens of this country.”

“Enough already with only more hatred, more wars. Let’s figure out a way out of this already,” says Zedan, who points to a lack of connection between people as part of the problem.

When you get right down to it, the situation is tragic and the women really suffer. Some 18 or 19 year old kid, whether an Arab or /Jew gets swept up in he emotionalism of the times, and gets himself killed. He will be hailed as a hero or martyr, but in the cold light of day, it is family, especially the mothers who grievously suffer his loss and are never ever the same or happy again.

the horrible thing about a conflict like Israel and Palestinian conflict is that there are so many outside forces that care nothing about the people involved that want there to be no peace.

Lysistrata forced peace by having women take over the Akropolis where all the money was, and wearing armor and carrying weapons. I happen to be reading it at present, very slowly, and they were not naked and helpless, relying on their alure to men. They routed the male chorus and the armed officers, held on to the Akropolis, and THEN used their alure to force peace, because the men were unable to stand up straight due to their erections.

This Women for Peace works good as an idea, but on the Arab side, the men will potentially honor kill or at least beat the women into abandoning it.
