Bowe Bergdahl, the solider who deserted his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was subsequently captured by a Taliban affiliate, will not have to serve jail time for the crime. In a stunning announcement on Friday, the judge deciding the case ordered Bergdahl to pay $1,000 from his salary for the next 10 months. He will be demoted to the rank of E-1 during that time and after paying his fine he will be dishonorably discharged. Prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to the charges, to 14 years in prison.

8 soldiers signed up to serve this country- but ended up losing their lives trying to find and bring back a DESERTER

Absolutely disgraceful

Not only that- but apparently we the taxpayers are paying off his fine because evidently he’ll remain a private until his fine is payed off

The judge needs to be disbarred for incompetence!

No doubt. There was a guy on my ship that was being harrassed by a homo who was awaiting his discharge for being caught doing the nasty on the ship with another homo. His superiors didn’t do anything about it. He left his post and went AWOL. Caught up with him on fakebook and he was eventually caught. They charged him with desertion and missing ships movement. He spent time in the brig and got a general discharge. Not condoning what he did, it was wrong but I’d have probably dine the same thing if my superiors didn’t do anything about it. I’m going to message him to see what he thinks of this travesty. At least when my shipmate left we weren’t at war and no one died looking for him. Obama and his minions still have a grasp on the operations in this country just like the clintoons. Come on President Trump, Lets get this country on the right path again soon.

Hopefully it wont be a very long one and his remaining time will be spent in agonizing fear and desperation.

This shithead got a few hundred thousand dollars in back pay and his fine is only $12,000!

If I was him I would pay the lump sum and tell the army to kiss my ass and walk out. After all, what are they going to do to him now, sentence to him to KP for a year!

Military courts are very sensitive to ensure that there is no pressure from the chain of command. During the campaign, Trump called, as I recall, for the death penalty. OK, he’s a candidate, not president. Within the past few days, with regard to Bergdahl’s sentencing, he said something like, “well, you know how I feel”, referring to his campaign statement. So now, we’ve got the Commander-in-Chief weighing in on the sentencing. That’s the C-in-C possibly influencing the court’s sentencing.

While I suspect that a stiffer sentence could have been imposed while maintain independence from influence from the chain of command, Trump, as president, should have simply kept his mouth shut or should have said something to the effect that he had complete confidence in the court to impose a suitable sentence, given its knowledge of the particulars of the case.

As private citizens, we have considerable leeway in our statements. Like it or not, a president must be considerably more circumspect.

I hate to say it, but you can blame this light sentence on Trump.

That last paragraph was obviously sarcasm. They should hang this guy by is toes at the main base entrance and let the MPs hand each car a baseball bat to swing at him ad they drive in/out of the base.
