Hollywood Actress: Why I Homeschool My Kids
The Daily Signal ^ | November 9, 2017 | Sam Sorbo

Posted on 11/13/2017 8:36:08 PM PST by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

My name is Sam Sorbo. I’m a mom to three wonderful children, and the author of “They’re YOUR Kids: An Inspirational Journey from Self-Doubter to Home School Advocate.”

Home schooling seems like a radical idea—but only because we are conditioned to think of it that way. Why? Because most of us attended school. But after nine overhauls of our public education system in less than 30 years, according to Pew Research Center data, the U.S. has fallen in world standings for education, to 39th in math and 24th in reading. We are officially behind Estonia. … The schools aren’t getting the job done.

If you feel incapable of teaching your own children it’s because you were taught that you were not capable. Don’t handicap your child by insisting on sending her to an institution for eight hours a day.

We need to rethink education in this country. My mission is to empower parents to be the lead learners for their children. I say lead learner because education is not about downloading information into the child. Education should focus on how to learn, not what. Especially in today’s economic environment, where technological advances change the business landscape so quickly, we need elasticity in our abilities, and that comes from being able to teach ourselves.

But instead, public schools teach children that they must be in a classroom with an instructor to learn. This predicated the snowflake crisis in our universities, where young people feel “triggered” by diverse ideas. They only know what they’ve been taught, and cannot think for themselves, so anything that challenges their worldview is perceived as hostile, and they lose their self-confidence and self-control.

Public school forms a wedge between the child and the parent—that’s inevitable.

There’s a family with their head screwed on straight.

I am proud of them.

I’m also very happy to have them speak out about it.

Very very very good!

Three exceptionally good looking kids.

While we’re on the subject, they should have ten more.

That’s how we get our nation back.

That would only be possible with the crushing of feminism so that pregnancy is not considered a disability.

We both know where babies are coming from.

I say tell the Leftists to go to hell, and we (our families) can bear solid Americans in solid American homes.

If they don’t want to join in, so much the better.

I went to public schools in NYC in the 1950s and 1960s. They used to be the best in providing an functional education. By 1964 the SAT scores had peeked. I graduated HS in 1966. You could already notice the downturn by then. Definitely by 1975, the difference was incredibly negative.

What destroyed the quality of education in the NYC public school system? In my opinion based on first hand observations, the teachers union. The teachers went on strike for the first time in 1961. In 1962 the United Federation of Teachers officially represented teachers in NYC. This event had a ripple effect on the entire country. The biggest joke in the education racket is a college degree at any level ( Bachelors, Masters, PHD.) in 'Education'. To teach specific subjects in public schools all you need is a degree in education. You don't have to prove proficiency or even basic knowledge in the subjects you teach. That is why the Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Civics or History scores are down to 39th place trending to last before long if something is not done to turn it around. Home schooling just might be the last best hope for a step in the right direction to do that.

Part of the problem is that we no longer encourage excellence. We teach mediocrity. We teach at the pace of the dumbest kid in the class, all in the imbecilic pursuit of not damaging their precious “self-confidence”.

You never achieve excellence without effort. But teachers insist on “No Student Left Behind”. Here is a little fact. If a student doesn’t try, because there is no penalty for not trying - everyone suffers.

When every student is held back because of one stupid student; everyone suffers.

They stood up and told us what they were going to do to us - right to our faces. And we did nothing about it.

Somebody in Hollywood I can actually get behind.

So called public education is a danger to the child, the family and our nation.

Great article. I have homeschooled both of my children although one is now at a private Christain high school (you can’t teach the unwilling).

The other is in 7th grade, doing Algebra II, high school level formal logic (not that they teach this in high school), high school level American Government (from a conservative textbook), and reads classics like Dickens and Shakespeare. Oh, and as a bonus, he is already exhibiting a high level of conservative values and can pick apart any argument set forth by any liberal. And he just turned 13.

There are so many amazing resources out there to help people homeschool their children. If I can do it, anyone can.

“By 1964 the SAT scores had peeked.”

Education is absolutely loaded with people doing “research” as if human personality can be quantified scientifically. Why can’t they go back and review 1964, the high water mark in achievement?
