A preschool that leases space from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder is shutting down at the end of the month after the church congregation voted to become a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
"It put us out of business," said Active Boulder Kids owner Kristen Argow Heaton.
About 90 percent of the congregation that attended a church meeting on the matter last month voted to move forward with plans to outfit a portion of the building to provide living quarters for an immigrant taking sanctuary.
Argow Heaton said that parents notified the church ahead of the vote that they had safety concerns, and those concerns were not addressed, prompting more than half of the 22 children who attend the preschool to be withdrawn.
"They were not concerned about the person going into sanctuary," she said. "They were concerned about people against the idea of sanctuary doing something to the location. It was more outside concern."
The school is not affiliated with the church but leases space in the building.
Rev. Kelly Dignan disputed the claim that the concerns of the school and parents were not listened to, saying school officials were notified in July of the congregation's plans. She added that the school had already been discussing whether its location at the church was working for the school's business model and whether it was sustainable for it financially to remain.
"We wish them all the best in their other location," Dignan said. "Our congregation will continue to offer big, courageous love in a world that would have us feel paralyzed by fear."

Liberals always have a victimhood pecking order. In this case, it is a 22:1 advantage for illegal alien over legal American children (I'm making an assumption here).
Immigrants or illegal alien invaders and freeloaders?
I saw that headline and thought “Wow, what kind of church would do THAT!?”
Hit the link and immediately saw “Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder”.
Oh. Never mind.
Yep...that is exactly why I put “congregation” in scare quotes in my first comment. But there are plenty of mainstream Protestant and Catholic congregations that would happily reach the same conclusion...protect one illegal at the expense of a whole school full of legal Americans.
Ok. Here we have a group entering into a conspiracy to harbor an illegal alien in violation of federal law. Raid them, arrest the illegal, and seize the building under federal forfeiture law.
So, if the parents are so (rightfully) afraid of the illegal immigrants, why do they still insist on making the school into a ‘sanctuary’ for them? Did they not think about how the day to day reality would be? That’s what giving sanctuary means. They could be holed up anywhere.
They claim the parents were not concerned about the risk supplied by illegals, instead they say the parents were concerned about the people against sanctuary locations. Why do I not believe them?
Unitarians. Church. Not.
“They were concerned about people against the idea of sanctuary doing something to the location.”
Oh, yeah, again, always so worried about “right-wingers” being violent! LOL
Again, lefties, take a look in the mirror. You’ll see it’s only you.
The Church of What’s Happenin’ Now
And the Lord will say, “I never knew you.”
That’s Jack’s church, it’s around the corner from me. There’s actually another UC in the vicinity, as too many refuse to attend his.
My last visit was in 91, just after we invaded Kuwait. He announced that his family was safely in the NW and after the service he would join them, I got up and walked out.
You’re on your own now folks............
Typical Boulder stuff.
(I’m behind the wire ;)
No, they said they’re worried about us conservatives, who are against illegal aliens. They’re worried us NAZIs would attack the “church” because of their illegal enabling.
The church would rather make a political statement than provide a safe learning environment for 22 young children.
Well, at least Abdul Mohamhocks won’t have to travel too far to find the next church to shoot up. Just open his sanctuary bedroom door...and he’s there!
Pull the non-profit status of the so-called church, arrest the clergy and those involved with breaking federal laws, and if Colorado fails to act, stop all federal funding to that state until they comply.
It is possible to have parents who are not members, drop their kids off for some type of schooling and for some period of time.
The reverend has staked out her position and now shes Dignan.
The school is renting space at the “church.” The school had nothing to do with making the church into a sanctuary.
The church “congregation” voted to make the church a sanctuary against the desires of the preschool and the parents of the kids attending that school. Half the parents then pulled their kids out and the school went out of business.
The church gave the school a big rousing “FU, we care more about illegals than your kids.”
Doesn't matter. Unitarians don't worship the Lord anyway.
