A flat-Earther's plan to launch himself in a homemade rocket just hit a speed bump
Washington Post ^ | 11/24/17 | Amy B Wang and Avi Selk

A California man who planned to launch himself 1,800 feet high Saturday in a homemade scrap-metal rocket — in an effort to prove that Earth is flat — said he is postponing the experiment after he couldn't get permission from a federal agency to conduct it on public land.

Instead, Mike Hughes said the launch will take place sometime next week on private property, albeit still in Amboy, Calif., an unincorporated community in the Mojave Desert along historic Route 66.

“It's still happening. We're just moving it three miles down the road,” Hughes told The Washington Post on Friday. “This is what happens anytime you have to deal with any kind of government agency.”

Hughes claimed the Bureau of Land Management said he couldn't launch his rocket as planned Saturday in Amboy. He claimed the federal agency had given him verbal permission more than a year ago, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

He should be given the Darwin Award in advance.

...sometimes it pays to read the instructions...

Check out the contrast in the “equipment” of the two-

“Carli’s flight equipment included a parachute, helmet, waterproof coveralls, GPS device, mobile phone, satellite phone, flotation device chair, aluminum thermal flight suit, and at least five days of food and drinking water.”

That’s the Balloon Priest in 2008.

Now here’s Larry Walters, truck driver, in 1982, who got it all going:

“lawn chair, pellet gun, a CB radio, sandwiches, beer, and a camera.”

I think a plane ticket with a window seat might be cheaper and safer. He can take a camera.

No, I see it on many cars. It’s intended as an insult to Christians. i.e. that Darwin replaced Christianity.

It was used by Christians when the Roman Empire was trying to exterminate them.

Still trying.

He should be given the Darwin Award in advance.

I think that by definition it can only be awarded posthumously.

‘Ol Larry Walters did it back in the 1980s and got up to 16,000 feet, much to the surprise of the airline pilots who saw him bobbing around near LAX.

More incredible was his method of returning to ground. He had a BB Gun and popped a few balloons and descended to the ground. If it was me, I would have had a parachute.

This was Larry Walter’s rig:

“lawn chair, pellet gun, a CB radio, sandwiches, beer, and a camera.”

Yup. They used to murder people for the heinous crime of owning a bible. Right up to the 1800’s.

I'm pretty sure that still happens too.

“I think that by definition it can only be awarded posthumously.”

A lot of Darwin Award winners do so fatally, however, the rules only require that the winner be unable to reproduce.

You can say that again. I said I “kind of” was leaning toward the “flat earth theory” and my daughter went ballistic and got really upset. I had to lie and say I was just kidding, she got so upset. I give everything a fair chance—listen to all points of view (I am classically trained). I love new concepts and different points of view and have always been very curious. But, like with Marxism, when Objective Truth and reality are ejected—and is irrational.....they lose me. Flat Earthers haven’t totally lost me yet which says something for their “theory”. Only because I know the elites have total control over publishing agencies and too many textbooks and Hollywood since 1776 and I can see them laughing at fooling all the sheeple like they had with the World Wars, etc.

“Cognitive dissonance” occurs when people aren’t “educated” but are brainwashed. They have emotional investment into their lifetime belief system and when you bring up anything that challenges that belief system (which is engrained from birth by pictures and “facts” that are repeated over and over) but you have weak or little Classical knowledge and wisdom, rational debate can not occur. When other people challenge invested belief systems, they are too emotional and logic is out the window. They are incapable of reason and logic and listening to facts are earth shattering to them if they contradict their ideology.

It is what the “snowflakes” are like. Ideologues. Brainwashed from Kindergarten to believe lies and warped reality like boys can be girls and Vice is Virtue. They are irrational— all emotions. No ability to “think” outside their programmed socialist tiny box that the schools forced them into with their mass brainwashing system in place since Carter.

The ex-KGB Yuri Bezmenov explains this effect, a brainwashing technique, which is used in Common Core and all “eduction” since 1979. Actually brainwashing started in America with Horace Mann but it wasn’t “mandatory” nor did he have control over all textbooks yet, nor could he discard the Bible and Classical Education and have a teachers college to brainwash and be able to control the “teachers” . The system really wasn’t completed perfectly until Common Core era.

I’ve never even seen half the movies Hollywood made in 1776.

That's a shame.  I still have some 1789 and 1776 movies on VHS.

My favorites ----

And two if by sea (Thriller)
Barnaby Riddywad is captured by Red Coats and holds off confessing military secrets until he is titillated.
Major Endeavor (Comedy)
A British major smuggles a drill into bed and puts a hole in the bundling board; hilarity ensues.
The Hessians are coming!  The Hessians are coming! (Comedy)
A false alarm results in the premature invasion of Quebec, but no one speaks French.

Apparently this guy has never been in an airplane before or he would know the world is not flat

I have been in a few and have never seen the curvature of the Earth.

I think you would have to get a ride on a SR71 to see the curvature of the Earth.
