Interesting. My old man was from western New York state and had never met a black person until he joined the Air Force during the Korean war. I never recall him having anything to say either way about blacks. Basically I never heard him refer to blacks in any way differently than he did whites.

My mother's elders, on the other hand, were stone cold racists. They were Camden, NJ people and they grew up around blacks. I think they were heavily influenced by seeing their beloved home city, home to the headquarters of major industrial giants Campbell's Soup Co and RCA, get taken over by blacks and in the space of like 10 short years - late 60s to late 70s - turned into a poverty stricken, crime infested war zone they couldn't set foot in safely.

In retrospect I say that the "war on poverty" had a lot to do with taking the poorest people and destroying their families in that same timeframe and that probably played a big role in black neighborhoods turning into ghettos almost overnight. But my elder relatives didn't see it that way.
