Al Franken announced his resignation on the floor of the Senate today, a development that makes abundantly clear that the Democratic and Republican parties have never been more different in modern American history than they are right at this moment.
Frankens speech started off on a surprisingly defiant note, going much farther than he had up until this point in asserting that the charges made against him are not true. But that only reinforces the point Im making about the two parties, as Ill explain in a moment:
Over the last few weeks, a number of women have come forward to talk about how they felt my actions had affected them. I was shocked. I was upset. But in responding to their claims, I also wanted to be respectful of that broader conversation, because all women deserve to be heard and their experiences taken seriously. I think that was the right thing to do. I also think it gave some people the false impression that I was admitting to doing things that in fact I havent done. Some of the allegations against me are simply not true. Others I remember very differently.
As I argued in a piece today at The Week, when it comes to sex scandals, its usually the most guilty, least repentant politicians who wind up surviving, whether its Bill Clinton or Roy Moore or Donald Trump. Those latter two have seen their party go through the same cycle: At first the party (or at least significant portions of it) is outraged at revelations of their misbehavior and withdraws its support for their candidacy. But then, when it appears that the offender is not politically doomed, they come back to stand behind him.
Many Republicans rescinded their support for Trump after the release of the Access Hollywood

“That was NO resignation.”
Exactly. It was a pre-resignation letter hinging on a Moore victory.
lol> ‘Two’ + ‘great’ describing US party system
Suddenly democrats have integrity. Right.
My apologies, DiW! Wisconsin is no doubt a bastion of sanity. ;-)
“Wisconsin is no doubt a bastion of sanity. ;-)”
Well, not ALL of it! We’re still stuck with Dane County, Milwaukee County and the NW corner of our state that’s being INFECTED by Minnesota!
An easy mistake to make. :)
Stuart Smalley did NOT resign. He only promised to resign weeks from now. That’s not binding.
Wait...what happened to the Russians?
I’ve never seen the lefties thrown off their game this bad ever. It shows that just a little pushback against these people was all that was needed, and we had to wait decades for it to happen!
LOL
Mondale says it all (plus being the home of the DFL (Democrat-Farmer-Labor))
And Dems know that Moore is going to win..once he wins Franken will say “Well once Moore goes so will I” and the Dems will go on and on about how the GOP are a bunch of child molesting perverts..this is ALL about 2018..the left could care less about women this is all about gaining power
He hasn’t resigned, he only said he would. After Moore wins he will refuse to leave and the press will shift a%ention to Moore.
ROTFLMAO!
If you ever leave Wisconsin the state may teeter and crash into libblivion! ;-)
Sorry neither party has any integrity, bit are beyond corrupt.
Too bad that Wisc. and Mich. don’t block all of Minn.’s access to the GREAT Lakes...
short memories. What about Bob Packwood?
(or am I thinking of Dukakis?)
We don’t even have one “great party”.
Granted, they’re both big.
But neither is great, and both generally act against the interests of the American people.
Well, Mondale did get the Senate filibuster reduced from 2/3’s to 60(%).
They will never get out from under Billy Clinton and his hatchet Hillary. Not to mention all the knee pad “feminists.”
“If Moore wins he will probably have to resign.
It would be difficult for democrats to effectively attack Moore....”
The Dims prove again and again they do not require anything resembling a solid foundation to launch a plan of attack.
They’ll continue to go after Moore regardless. And God forbid Moore bows out, they will double down on Trump’s Access Hollywood “admission of guilt” as proof he should go as well.
