Egypt's Coptic pope shuns US VP Mike Pence over Jerusalem

The Coptic Christian pope has canceled a meeting with the US vice president in Cairo, in protest against America’s move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Palestinian leader Abbas also snubbed Mike Pence.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Coptic Church said it “excused itself from hosting Mike Pence” when he visits Egypt, citing US President Donald Trump’s decision made “at an unsuitable time and without consideration for the feelings of millions of people.”

Egypt’s Coptic Church said it would pray for “wisdom and to address all issues that impact peace for the people of the Middle East.”

The decision comes a day after Egypt’s top Muslim cleric Ahmed al-Tayeb also refused to meet Pence.

Egyptian Coptic Christians, the largest religious minority in the region, make up about 10 percent of the country’s 93 million people.

The Coptic Pope’s refusal to host Pence is largely symbolic but significant, because it demonstrates the Arab solidarity for Palestinians irrespective of religious affiliations. …

Guess we have the right enemies. We weren’t going to GAIN allies over that move even if it was the correct one.

This is garbage. The Copts don’t care about the Palis. The Muslims have treated the Copts worse than anyone.

I suspect deep down it’s an attempt to stop further persecution of his people by acting like they’re against the move too.

Never mind these fake news outlets trying to imply that Copts are Arabs when they are not.

Exactly. The Religion of Peace is anything but and the Copts know it all too well.

Coptic Christians get shot all the time by islamists. They are discriminated against by law in Arab states. They work to make their voices heard, but never succeed. The MSM ignores them UNTIL THEY SAY SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT PRESIDENT TRUMP. Then suddenly, the media hears them and makes a big deal out of it, given them column inches above the fold.

I hate the MSM.

Why doesn’t a nation have the right to decide where their capital is?

In essence these people are saying that Israel shouldn’t be a nation, period.

This is a rather ridiculous news story in general, when the media says that “Donald Trump has decided that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” umm, news flash, God decided that about three thousand years ago and the Israeli government has been located in Jerusalem since the modern state came into being in 1948.

Western nations making some vague noises about Tel Aviv being the capital in their minds — that’s always just been a charade to keep Arab nations slightly less hostile. Look what we’ve gained from that over seventy years.

Good for Trump stating the obvious, but he didn’t “decide” anything, he’s just recognizing a reality.

Political move. There is no way the Copts can openly support DJT on this one. Even a neutral response would have seen blood in the streets of Shobra.

The Egyptian copts have the role of sitting priests 24/7 in the tomb of the sepulchre
A rite they can be guaranteed in the capital of Israel
Maybe not so much in the capital of palestine

No Tears for Egypt’s Coptic Christians

About the Egyptian Muslim Shooting on Coptic Christmas (Why I Don’t Care)
By Debbie Schlussel
January 8, 2010
[Excerpt:]
Well, as I’ve noted before, it’s an unfortunate but true fact that most Christians in the Middle East sided with Muslims against the Jews (not just against the Israelis). And among the most viciously anti-Semitic Christians in the Mid-East are the Copts. At ten percent of the Egyptian population, they historically not only supported Egypt against the Jews and Israel, but the Copts participated in Egyptian Muslim pogroms against Jews, supported the expulsion of nearly the entire Jewish Community of Egypt, and even participated in looting and seizing Jewish property before and after the expulsion was complete. And, although they are mostly found in Egypt, in every other Middle Eastern nation in which they have a small presence, Copts have consistently participated in persecuting the Jews. It’s not by accident. They are simply following the openly anti-Semitic teachings of Coptic Pope Shenouda III.

As I noted on Christmas Eve, despite the hatred and persecution of Christians by Muslims, the Christians in the Middle East–with the exception of some factions of Maronite Christians in Lebanon–bet against Israel and the Jews. And they picked the wrong side.
