The city of Memphis got rid of two Confederate statues Wednesday night, after a Tennessee two-step around a state law designed to prevent just that. It was a surprise maneuver that left the Sons of Confederate Veterans sputtering in anger and proclaiming to all who would listen: “Memphis stabbed you all in the back.”

I wonder if any of the idiots in Memphis city government even know that Jefferson Davis was a Memphian for a time after the war. I mentioned this to a young columnist who was a cheerleader for removing the statues. He had no idea.
I hope it doesn’t a hundred and forty years to officially disavow some of the Memphians around today. I’d start with Willie Herenton, the entire Ford clan, and the Commerical Appeal editorial section.
Selling public property requires a bidding process that was totally ignored here. The Mayor and “buyers” need to go to jail. They broke many laws to pull this off and need to be held accountable.
I wonder if our Indianan Mayor and the City Council will end up behind bars. They broke at least two laws handling this in this manner. The state commission might just push back.
If Forrest and Davis could speak from the grave, they’d ask for their graves and memorials to be removed for that cesspool known as Memphis.
I’m from Memphis. My family has been here since before the days Jefferson Davis lived here. My great-grandfather, a Memphis, fought under Forrest. I care about this place. The city has problems, but I rather resent FReepers trashing it based mostly on stereotypes. There are lots of historical reasons the city is the way it is. The primary problem hurting Memphis is the impact liberalism has had on blacks. There are many conservatives here fighting for our side. And there are thousands of Christians here, too. We have some of the most vibrant bible-believing churches in America. There are many wonderful things amidst the crime stories. Most of the crime is confined to the black community. They are doing it to themselves. I have much more to say, but I will spare you.
Very few Southern men today care about their heritage. They care more about the Middle East than they care about the South. They care about football more than anything.
On the one hand I understand your sentiment, being from Massachusetts going back to family who fought in the Civil War as well. On the other, MA is so flagrantly absurd and totalitarian that there’s not much I can in it’s defense. Much as I admire the history of my state, and men who used to live here, including those who stood athwart “the rude bridge that arch’d the flood”, at this point knowing when to hold and when to fold is a valuable asset. I have no intention of staying here, and once I coordinate my situation to a better state I’m packing my bags and not looking back.
I wondered why he hadn’t started a nationwide revival.
So now liberals believe in less government control of land? If I were conservatives in that town I would start forcing the city to sell all the public land for as cheap as they sold the parks.
Oh well, Memphis is going to fall into the Mississippi River and sink with the next New Madrid quake anyway.

Skyscraper count doubled in past five years
I went to Ole Miss so Memphis was our town for partying and airport etc
I drove down parkway past the old Jewish fancy neighborhood and noticed boarded up mansions
