WASHINGTON (AP) House Republicans early Thursday unveiled a new, stripped-down spending bill to prevent a government shutdown this weekend and allow quarreling lawmakers to punt most of their unfinished business into the new year.
The bill would stave off a government shutdown through Jan. 19 and permit lawmakers to head home for the holidays. It would delay battles over the budget and immigration into January, denying Democrats wins that they had hoped to score this year.
Failure to pass the measure would trigger a government shutdown at midnight Friday, which would amount to a political pratfall just after the GOP scored a major win on a landmark tax bill. With Republicans controlling Washington, they would not have anyone else to blame for a shutdown debacle.
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Thursday the White House is committed to keeping the government open. She added in an appearance on Fox News Channels Fox & Friends that it would be a shame if the Democrats force a shutdown of the government in the 11th hour of trying to negotiate something.

I think they should ask for what they want. If the Dems shut it down, doesnt that mean that PT decides what is essential and not? Or are those predefined?
AFAIC Id love for PT to decide on all spending!
Our gov has trouble spending?
hmmm, so Trump gets to decide if congress gets a big Chsirtmas break or if the the fedgov lower employees aka non-essential get a big Christmas break? hmmm
Gee, the hardest hit would get a delayed-pay (but paid nonetheless!) vacation thru the holidays.
Dems think the Right will cower in fear at the prospect of a “shutdown”. Beware who they’re dealing with: bringing everything to a crashing halt over a single legitimately-debatable issue unrelated to the point of the bill? Trump WILL make them own it, hard.
This week, Dems are spending a lot of time not taking “yes” for an answer - a key sign of cognitive dissonance - by fighting lowered taxes on middle-class and increased taxes on the rich, and getting an otherwise perfectly Left-acceptable spending continuation because of an unrelated issue. As Haley just said elsewhere: names are being taken.
With Republicans controlling Washington, they would not have anyone else to blame for a shutdown debacle.
How is it when they weren’t in control, it was the Republican’s fault for being obstructionists? Heads Dems win, tails, Repubs lose!
Since the Republicans control congress they would be responsible for a shutdown.
When the democrats controlled congress the Republicans we’re responsible for the shutdown.
House vote: 231-188 approving the CR.
I think that’s an error. All those bills are MUST SPEND
Well, our gov has trouble spending in the same way that Tammy Faye Bakker had trouble applying eye makeup.
