Erie, Pennsylvania pummeled by record 5 feet of snow

(Reuters) - Snow piled up in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after two days of record-breaking snowfall that had already surpassed 5 feet (1.5 meters), breaking city and state records, according to the National Weather Service.

Though residents are used to winter snow squalls blowing in from adjacent Lake Erie, which straddles the border with Canada, the Christmas storm is already one for the ages.

"This is an incredible amount of snow that we're trying to move," the Erie Police Department said in statement after the city declared a "snow emergency" on Tuesday, imploring people to stay off the streets.

I grew up in Boylston, NY. Lived in Syracuse for 35 years and now live in Rochester. I am very familiar with the nature of lake effect snows.

Driving north from Syracuse on I-81 you could see the clouds, by the time you got to Central Square it was snowing lightly, heavier in Parish, and whiteout conditions from Pulaski to Mannsville, and the reverse through Adams and perfectly clear sunny day north to the river and up to Messina.

These bands would set up and stay for a week at a time, putting down 12 - 18 inches per day. After a week of that, you would have to shovel the roof, make sure that you kept the doors clear for a considerable distance and prayed that the wind didn’t pick up.

We went to Comstock a few times. Great fun on the toboggan. We lived near Maplewood Elementary and, at the time, there wasn’t much - hence the trek to Sycamore. Winter was fun, even when I delivered the Free Press in the a.m. and the LSJ in the afternoon.

I remain a Michigander at heart.

Best line from the article:

"Out of Doritos. Family is arguing. Dogs are getting ornery. It’s been 3 days since my last chicken wing. We are out of whiskey,” wrote Nicole Massari on her Instagram account @theworldaroundnikki, along with a video showing her Pennsylvania home surrounded by snow. (My emphasis.)

Looks like those poor people are reaching catastrophically low blood alcohol levels. Send the St. Bernards with their rescue casks.

Did You know ? A Giraffe’s long neck contains only seven elongated cervical vertebrae, the same number as in human necks.

A friend and her family spend Christmas at a lodge not 50 miles from Erie, and I was concerned they’d get caught up in this. She said they had a few inches only, just enough to make it pretty.

The warmer the air, the greater its’ capacity to hold water vapor. Therefore, the greater capacity for precipitation when the air mass cools. Lake effect snow, for instance.
