Is Rafsanjani family still doing well? I once heard that he was the wealthiest man in Iran. I noticed that he is dead, but his money should be still around.

Look what I found. Somebody else has more money:

Revealed: Iranian supreme leader’s $95 billion business empire

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei controls a business empire worth around $95 billion - a sum exceeding the value of his oil-rich nation’s current annual petroleum exports - a six-month Reuters investigation shows.

Here is an article from 2010: http://homylafayette.blogspot.se/2010/01/makhmalbaf-secrets-of-khameneis-life.html

Khamenei’s personal wealth: $30 billion.

His family’s wealth: $6 billion.

Cash
$22 billion of the $36 billion were kept in Iran in the form of currency. During the post-election unrest, it was decided to move a major portion of this money to Syria by way of Turkey. The shipment was exposed and confiscated in Turkey. Khamenei was worried that the money would be blocked in Iran if the regime were to collapse.

Naturally, it is very difficult to verify this. But, he is not the only one with (possibly) a lot of money http://time.com/money/4641093/vladimir-putin-net-worth/

How is he going to transfer the decision making to his successor?

Can he say “Listen young man, now you are going to be the top dog, but since I am not 100 % sure that you will make the right decisions I will be behind you”

Will it work, or will the succession be violent?

Iranian authorities have stated that the protests were organized via the popular smartphone app Telegram, pointing the finger at “counter-revolutionaries.” Meanwhile, the administration of President Hassan Rouhani believes that its conservative foes are the culprits behind the unrest.

It has not been lost on observers that the initial protests featured relatively rare chants, such as “Death to Rouhani.” Mashhad is home to conservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi, Rouhani’s main rival in the May 2017 presidential election, and Raisi’s father-in-law, radical cleric Ahmad Alamolhoda, who has defied governmental authority on matters such as the holding of concerts. In this vein, the protests erupted one day after the Tehran police chief announced, in a seismic policy shift, that women would no longer be arrested over “improper veiling” but rather sent to educational classes.

Yes. The Grand Mosque was stunning with all of the inlaid work with lots of turquoise. Naturally did not go in. I was rather unimpressed with the bazaar though. When driving towards Qom, seeing the golden dome was quite easy from a long way off.

One of the truly unique experiences was a Blue Angels show on the road to Qom. They were flying the Phantoms and had no speed restrictions.

This map doesn’t show all sites of protest nevertheless it gives a good visual understanding of how much there are spread across the country.

One can easily spot a shift in their political discourse: Hardliners were always quick in condemning popular unrest and brutally suppressing it. Now they preach about “people’s constitutional right to assemble and protest.”

Could it be used by the hardliners to kick out Rouhani when the protests increases?

What is that white banner? Is it some symbol of defiance?

By the way, why is economic situation so bad? What is the cause of their high inflation? I thought it was improved after Obama lifted sanction on Iran.

Not sure. Maybe a symbol of peace as in "don't shoot me, I'm a peaceful protester". Any one else have thoughts on this?
