The Washington Post ^ | December 27 | Editorial Board

THESE ARE dark days for journalists in Turkey, now the leader among governments that imprison news-gatherers. In one week alone, nearly 70 journalists were on trial on false accusations of supporting terrorism. Under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic alliance, and not all that long ago a boisterous democracy, has fallen into the grip of dictatorship. The theater of the absurd is in full season.

only fitting that Turkey resembles their ally Russia...where Stalinism continues to make a comeback especially with regard to media.

Turkey thinks they are allies with Putin. Putin is playing with Turkey.

They have some joint business ventures, but I doubt Putin has forgotten the Russian Pilot that Turkey shot down on the Syrian/Turkey border. Putin has a very good memory.

And he’s just “faking” it with Iran too and the funding of North Korea?

When you don’t publish the “fake news” in tyrannical countries you go to jail, in America you get banished. Ergo, the need for the free internet.

Thank God for Trump’s use of Twitter before he could be censored.

I have a feeling a lot of leftists cheered Rrdogan as journalists and now are getting executed. It is a similar pattern of liberals ushering us as ISIS brides.

No, those two connection are real for Russia.

Why? It is normally about oil or money.

It is the same situation with Turkey, but I doubt Turkey will have long term partnerships with Iran or Russia. Too many issues for that to last a long time. And Erdogan the Islamist is a very unreliable partner.

Yes, by all means, a free internet.

BUT, that is not the plan under “net neutrality”.

Any deal between Sunni’s (Turkey) and Iran (Shia’s) is fleeting.

Both breed nothing but hate, racism and subjection. But they ultimately hate each other as much as they hate the West.

Totalitarianism in all forms is Evil. Progressive, Socialist, Marxist, Fascist, Communist, Dictator, Islamist, Bureaucrap. ALL Evil!

Putin does not consider Turkey an alley.

Turkey is an opportunity for Putin.

Putin has political alliances with some very evil governments.

Does WaPo (from behind their paywall) acknowledge that the US may have had a role in the failed coup that precipitated the crack down in Turkey?

1. I despise the Washington ComPost.

2. Pay wall? I did not see one.

3. I do not believe there is any evidence the US participated in the failed (Faux) Coup.

4. Erdogan the Islamist is a know extreme serial Liar. Nobody dealing with him expects anything but lies and deception from him any longer. The EU left can bury their head in the sand and pretend it’s OK, but that changes nothing.

In my opinion, if the US were involved it would be CIA head Brennan helping with list of people to arrest during the ramp up of the Faux Coup.

The notion that the US had no role in the failed coup in Turkey would suggest there was a complete breakdown in Western intelligence in the region.

Even if Erdogan staged the coup in order to crack down on his opponents, it would mean intelligence operations were effectively useless since no one was able to warn the opposition or prevent the staged event from happening.

It is more likely that the US was made aware of the plot and decided not to get involved, but also decided not to warn the Turkish government of its existence.

Given how close Erdogan came to getting killed (another reason for believing the coup was real), it’s doubtful he’ll ever forgive the US for that ‘sin’ of omission.
