Republican wins Virginia seat that ended in a tie

Republican David Yancey will keep his seat in the Virginia House of Delegates after a state official pulled his name out of a bowl Thursday, deciding a contest that ended in a tie in November.

Yancey and Democrat Shelly Simonds each received 11,608 votes in their Newport News-based district. Initial results showed Yancey leading by just ten votes. A recount gave Simonds a one-vote edge. But Republicans challenged a single ballot, resulting in a tie.

Democrats sued to overturn the challenge, but on Wednesday a three-judge panel rejected their complaint. That led to Thursday’s drawing, in Richmond, out of a special bowl crafted by the resident potter at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Yancey would be the 51st Republican in the 100-member House of Delegates. Before November’s elections, Republicans held 66 seats. But Democrats put up a surprisingly strong showing, netting 15 Republican-held seats — and coming within a single vote of claiming a tie.

Virginia state law allows the loser of the draw to request a second recount. Simonds said Wednesday she would not request a second recount if she lost the drawing. Yancey declined to make the same pledge.

Nobody in VA should pat themselves on the back too hard over this...

The Republican was leading after the initial count. The Dem only took the lead after their usual method of stealing elections, recounts. No one in VA should be bothered by this outcome.

Name out of a bowl. At least in New Mexico we deal a hand of 5 card stud.

Wow, that’s really concerning!

What was the reason the Dem came so close? Did Pubbies sit out the race, as happened in ‘Bama, or did the Dem GOTV succeed wildly and tons of previous non-voters voted?

Thanks.

That’s what we’re trying to figure out. The Dem had little money and resources from what we can tell. If that reflects what might happen in November with depressed GOP turnout, it could be very, very ugly. Way too many Dems are motivated by unhinged hatred of Trump, and will vote against anything GOP, so that remains a big problem. GOP voters sitting on their butts aren’t going to help.

Ten bucks says that the Rat Party will find some Obola or BillyBob appointee to overturn this and, eventually, the Rat will be declared the victor.

Yippy Kai Ai!

Democrap can request a 2nd recount if she wishes, however.

The election board commissioned a custom hand-made bowl to draw the names out of, I wonder how much that cost.

Yes. One can only imagine the fraudulent votes, considered normal for the rats, were counted both times.

That would be Arlington County, Virginia. It is the highest-income county in the U.S. by median family income, and has the highest concentration of singles in the region.

You could spin it like Virginia has to cede territory to the district for their key role for the Confederate States in the Civil War.

DC always whines about a low tax base due to all the federal property in the district which is tax exempt. This would help even it out somewhat.

If Arlington County proves insufficient, then let them annex the adjoining counties as well.
