Community upset after HOA tells them to leave garage doors open or face $200 fine

AUBURN, Calif. (WCMH) – Members of a California community are upset after their homeowners’ association told them they need to keep their garage doors open during the day.

A list left with homeowners in the Auburn Greens subdivision is giving many residents a cause for concern. It mandates leaving garage doors up from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, KTXL reported.

Residents who fail to keep their garage door up face a $200 fine and an administrative hearing.

“I have nothing to hide. I understand that somebody had someone living in the garage. I don’t,” said Shelly Ia. “I am following the rules. All I am asking is a reasonable way of going around this. If you want to do a monthly, bi-monthly inspection of my garage, I have nothing to hide. If I have something stored in there and you don’t like it, I’ll remove it.”

A friend had his car stolen right out of his garage, and his garage door was closed. Leaving your door open is just advertising free stuff for the free stuff crowd to choose from.

I’d put up a poster of the HOA president making out with his gf or dressed as a dominatrix.

Call it what you will, organizations are just one more form of gubmint; doesn’t matter if the problems are a result of our having voted, not voted, etc.

Besides lording it over you/me/all in their specific ways, they, as a group, constitute a whole to enslave, along w/BigBro, licensed and w/their nod.!

Not limited to BigBro gubmint, edu, media, Hollyweird, corprayshuns, etc.

Where does it end? It doesn’t!

Hmm...is it getting worse???

?????

Living anywhere that has HOA covenants means you are at the mercy of the busy bodies who live there...

I once owned a gorgeous custom ranch 2,000+ sqft condo with cathedral ceilings and skylights - loved it but absolutely hated the HOA.

I no longer live there.

Try being the president of one in a Jersey Shore condo! I just tried to keep the place clean and neat and had owners threaten to murder my dog. Worst experience of my life!

Also they should keep their homes unlocked, their keys in their cars and all their money and valuables in a bag outside the front door.

Funny you feel that way. A lot of neighborhoods without HOA’s look like dumpsters.

Yes, HOA’s can sometimes be a pain, but compared to some neighborhoods that do not have them, at least it LOOKS like semi-civilized people live there. I no longer find cars on blocks in the driveway attractive, pink garage doors and peeling paint just don’t move me like they did years ago. On the whole, I’ll take our HOA rather than our old neighborhood actoss the street that’s still deteriorating.

My building which I own is my business. The HOA takes care of the common area and community center. If they want to take care of my residence then they can take care of my mortgage, insurance, heating and cooling, upkeep.
read the HOA rules. If not in there, stuff it.

Who told you that? It is certainly not state law. Subdivision is simply dividing a large parcel of land into plats which can be zoned for various uses. You can have a industrial subdivision. The only requirement I am aware of for residential subdivisions is hookup to water and sewer unless the parcels are over a certain size.

You are probably thinking of the fact that many new subdivisions are built under a developer’s control who then turns over that control to an HOA. There are laws regarding such a transfer. But HOA are not mandatory for new subdivisions.

Wouldn’t someone living in the garage simply move into the house while the owner was away, or attend to his own business someplace else?
As to the Beta Male quote, that is apparently the response we are conditioned to give from childhood.

I should have written the only statutory requirement I am aware of for subdivisions developed after 1971 (may be wrong on the year) is that they be hooked up to water and sewer unless the lots are over a certain size.

I thought you got fined if you left your garage door open during the day because it looked bad. How times have changed.

WOW!!!! Great thread which shows how much FReepers hate being controlled by little dictators!

Have lived in a gated community for seniors and two condo complexes. Same problems - but most people buy into the premise of security and common area maintenance. Additionally, there are pools, club houses, tennis courts and activities not affordable otherwise.

Then of course you have the HOA Board of Directors, who love running for election, winning and then making the rules to protect their investment and give them power over others.

I am always amused by the “garage” people.

It seems to be a cultural thing. After putting a couch or lounge chairs in the garage, the seats face out towards the street.

Then, mama assumes the queen-bee position and has extended cell phone conversations with the world.

It’s a phenomenon that seems to span ethnicity and economic strata.

There are “garage people.”

Perhaps somebody could put a sign in their garage about the HOA in big bright letters. Something many wouldn’t say in polite company.
