Restaurant busboys, in line to earn a little more dough this year as minimum wage hikes hit across the country, are instead losing their jobs as chains look to cut costs.
One chain axing jobs is Red Robin, which hopes to save about $8 million this year by eliminating busboys at each of its 570 restaurants, the company said Monday.
Red Robin restaurants are located mostly in Western states, where the minimum wage has risen more quickly.

Self cleaning tables? Like a bowling alley!
100% disposable plates,cups, tableware?
Next no wait staff. Place order/pay with your phone.
100% predictable...
...unless you’re a socialist or a democrat - but I repeat myself.
You better clear your own table or I’ll open up a can of busboy on your azz...
I've worked in restaurants that did not use busboys. More work for the waitresses/waiters, but when all cooperate helping each other out, and the bartenders jump in when needed and not busy it works well enough. The wait staff does not have to give a share of tips to the non-existing busboys, either, so it's a win for them.
Now they won’t be criticized over the sexist word “busboy.”
I first read it like you did—caning rather than canning.
‘Thats gonna hurt canning is brutal’
how are they going to breathe inside all that metal...?
McDonalds is refurbishing all their restaurants., even in areas with lower minimum wage. Kiosks. Thanks to the dopey liberals, lots of kids will not have an opportunity for a first job.
While I agree, what’s going to happen when the wages are increased due to competition for labor that being projected the WH? Either way, higher wages.
The rule is...... When you come back, carry something
i was a daytime hostess and I bussed tables when it wasn’t busy.
The robotic nagger.
Unless you live in places like Vermont you don’t see too many kids working at McDonalds anymore..
The few times that I’ve been to a McDonald’s over the last 10 years, all I’ve ever saw working there are 50~60 somethings, or latinos who didn’t speak a word of english, except for the cashier.
It's where young folks can learn responsibility, work for pay, work for advancement, and figure out that college (or at least community college), or enlisting in the Military could be a nice next step.
There is a measure of self-respect that comes from earning a paycheck; and the Democrats' minimum wage laws are stealing this instructive life lesson from so many of our young folks.
No kiosk has ever been reported spitting into customer food while it’s being cooked on the grill, spilling curly hairs on the salad, or failing to wash its hands in hot soapy water after defecating.
First ever job was busboy at Bonanza, made $3.35/hour
Yup.
The minimum wage is a bar to being hired, not really a requirement to be paid more.
As a young teen I started at Wendy's making minimum wage for 6 months then became a busboy at a local restaurant making over three times as much money! Was a real eye opener that taught me not to accept the status quo.
Wendy's was constant labor, a very tough job - whereas bussing tables in a nice restaurant was quite relaxing in comparison and gave me so much more money for the same hours it was a joke. Also the more I helped the servers as a busboy the more they gave me in tips which was a direct lesson in the value of working harder, being kind to coworkers, and going above and beyond expectations.
