The latest data for the week ending Jan. 6 suggest the season may be peaking right now, the CDCs director, Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, told reporters Friday. But she warned that many more people will be infected before the season is over.
Theres a difference between an active flu season when a large number of people get sick and a severe season, when the numbers of people hospitalized for flu or who die from the infection are unusually high.
It can be hard to tell in real time where a flu season will fall on the severity scale, because sometimes reports of influenza hospitalization and deaths especially deaths among children lag.
That said, this year is starting to look like a severe season, and maybe more severe than last year, which was also bad, said Dr. Dan Jernigan, head of CDCs influenza division.
Theres lots of flu in lots of places, he said.
So far, Jernigan said, this years season doesnt appear to be quite as bad as 2014-15.
The influenza A virus H3N2 has caused the lions share of the illness in most parts of the country this year.
But recently theres been an uptick in activity by another influenza A virus, H1N1, Jernigan said, warning that even if the season appears to have peaked, flu viruses will circulate for weeks to come and people should continue to take precautions against getting infected.
Jernigan said that people over the age of 65 are being hospitalized for flu this season more than any other population. Even people age 50 to 64 are being hospitalized in high numbers.

Aliens don’t get human influenza?
I blame IMMIGRANTS, illegal and others.
I’m 60. Never had the shot. Never get sick, hardly ever anyway.
Good luck.
We both got flu shots. We’ve been in bed for a week. I’m afraid it’s going to turn into pneumonia though my lungs were clear last Tuesday. Thanks for the reply and good luck.
I got a Flu Shot, but I just had a terrible bout of asthma.
If you are already prone to respiratory infections or problems, you will likely have problems anyway. 1 week of Prednisone helped me to stop the coughing cycle. That plus the nebulizer.
It’s scary to think I’ve got two more weeks of this. The doctor did tell me the cough would last for two more weeks AFTER getting over the actual flu. Thanks for the reply.
Stop using san hanitizer, wash your hands less (of course always after the potty, sneeze into and cough into your sleeve/bent elbow...sleep, water...I’ve not gotten a flu shot in 15 yrs. I believe in building up a resistance. I also don’t trust the gubmnt drug payoff complex. Yes, I said San hanitizer.
If people would start by washing their damn hands every now and then...
I'm 74, got the flu shot back in September....staying home with my fingers crossed. Taking my normal 5,000IU of vitamin D/K. So far, okay.
The reason I started trying the deep breathing is because I DO NOT want it to turn into Pneumonia. Can’t hurt...plus it seemed to make my chest feel better.
HA...I regularly take about 8000 of D/K...good luck.
This year’s flu vaccine is way off the mark.
I take large doses of c and d.
It takes a good 10 days. Threw up for 3 days. Stomach started to calm down for a few days and it started all over again! Nasty bug.
It seems like I cough Everytime I exhale.
All I’ve got left is the dry involuntary cough, diarrhea and no appetite. The fever is gone. The cough prevents sleep.
I’m on Day 17 of this crap with no end in sight. Cough just hangs on.
Yes...I had to stop and start...but eventually I could breathe in (nose) to the count of 8, hold for 4, and breath out (of nose)...Can’t do it every time, but more and more as I try it.
