Flu Season Is Shaping Up As One Of The Worst In Years, Officials Say
Stat News ^ | 1-14-2018 | Helen Branswell

Posted on 01/14/2018 3:33:47 PM PST by blam

The latest data — for the week ending Jan. 6 — suggest the season may be peaking right now, the CDC’s director, Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, told reporters Friday. But she warned that many more people will be infected before the season is over.

There’s a difference between an active flu season — when a large number of people get sick — and a severe season, when the numbers of people hospitalized for flu or who die from the infection are unusually high.

It can be hard to tell in real time where a flu season will fall on the severity scale, because sometimes reports of influenza hospitalization and deaths — especially deaths among children — lag.

That said, this year is starting to look like a severe season, and maybe more severe than last year, which was also bad, said Dr. Dan Jernigan, head of CDC’s influenza division.

“There’s lots of flu in lots of places,” he said.

So far, Jernigan said, this year’s season doesn’t appear to be quite as bad as 2014-15.

The influenza A virus H3N2 has caused the lion’s share of the illness in most parts of the country this year.

But recently there’s been an uptick in activity by another influenza A virus, H1N1, Jernigan said, warning that even if the season appears to have peaked, flu viruses will circulate for weeks to come and people should continue to take precautions against getting infected.

Jernigan said that people over the age of 65 are being hospitalized for flu this season more than any other population. Even people age 50 to 64 are being hospitalized in high numbers.

Aliens don’t get human influenza?

Well, technically no, but it's because of our Super Male Vitality and not merely because we're an entirely different species.

Ok...well I hope you recover soon. My experience is those who do not get flu shots fare better than people who do.

Hang in there Cherry.

My wife and I got it too in mid-Dec. I can not remember ever being that sick. I slept for 4 day and lost 8 pounds in the process.

It was bad.

Do you have a humidifier going? It can make a difference. I hope you get to feeling better ASAP.

One of the filthiest things you can grab a hold of is the handles of a shopping cart, or the baskets with the handles on them.

USE the wipes the stores provide, and use them AGAIN after cashing out on your way out of the store.

When you wash your hands in the public restroom sing Happy Birthday and you will have used the right amount of time to wash you hands! Use your elbow to crank the paper towels out, and use the towels that you wiped your hands with to open the door and toss them as you exit. Otherwise, you are right back where you started.

Keep your hands AWAY from your face, too.
I am a Medical Technician, so feel comfortable giving out this advice.
Good Luck everybody!
Stay well!

I see. I’ve seen some people that don’t get a flu shot, don’t get the flu. But some obviously do get it. Puzzling but it likely depends on the strength of each person’s immune system. I personally refrain from any type of vaccines. So far, so good.

You are lucky.

When I was a teen a very good neighbor guy bragged about having never been to a doctor or hospital. And, he never did either, his whole life. At the age of 54 he had the big one, pronounced dead in his home. He was a very nice man.

Not. I’m already taking a med that lowers my immune system so I’ll pass. Thanks for the concern though.

Saying prayers for your dear wife, and for you, FRiend. Please keep us posted.

Keep up the liquids intake. Water, broth, gatorade (if necessary), etc.

Great advice, dear MB!! I’ve been doing all of that, religiously, for the past few weeks.

I normally do all of these things, just by habit...all of the time, but am especially aware, this season.

I agree with the headline. Almost everyone I talk with has experienced this flu in one way or another.

Hit me in the throat. A friend got bronchitis. Another friend ended up in the hospital with pneumonia and is now headed to a care facility.

I didn’t get one either. But when it came on — I took the Echinacea and extra Vitamin C. I got it on a Friday and was pretty much over it by the following Wednesday.

Still have some coughing spells, though.

From the Friday after Christmas until right now — I have used a whole package of cough drops. Started my second pack yesterday.

Doing fine here, but all this flu talk has me worried. Hope you all recover fine. Been having some unusual sneezing lately, so something is trying to attack me. Fighting it off so far. And yes, those who don’t get the flu shots get the flu more often and that makes their immune response much more natural and more responsive imho. Kinda of a catch 22 there though lol.
