Twitter and Facebook, you don’t have to use them. They suck, but what they do strikes me as legit. Google - Android, Gmail, Search/Adwords, Youtube - all anti competitive AND political beasts. Adwords is the key - who trusts the Google bidding to see if you’re paying the right number? If you give google a dollar to spend they’ll spend it, unfailingly, in seconds. #BreakUpGoogle

I DON'T use them, but it you really have to make a pain of yourself to others. It seems every Little League mom who organizes the practices and games, every music school and every kid's dance class uses that stuff (along with texting, which I also don't do).
It is not quite compulsory, but it is darn close for a lot of social activities. Even things like contest entries for buyers of CD-ROM based math programs are EXPECTED to use Facebook. If you email and ask for an alternative method, you will be accommodated, but not everyone is a stubborn Pole like me who is willing to jump through hoops.

Twitter and Facebook, you dont have to use them. This isn't true for everyone, depending on your profession.
I recently applied to be part of a professional organization. They told me that they only accept applicants who have a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media apps.
So, if you want to play in the big leagues, in certain industries, you must develop the network. Otherwise you are at a major disadvantage.
