Syrian is a mess because of the US lead Islamist insurgency. Prior to that, Syria was the most economically developed and socially modern Arab country. It had the strongest non-enery sector economy in the Arab world.

First, there has to be a nation of Palestine, before there may be any city declared to be its capital.
Palestinians have had seventy years to form a nation, and what have they done? Squat. Literally. It is as if the homeless people of San Francisco formed up and declared themselves a “nation”.
