San Francisco Sheriff Who Defended Sanctuary City Status Defeated In a Landslide

San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi looks like he’ll be updating his resume after suffering a landslide loss in his re-election bid last night. \

Mirkarimi was in office when Kate Steinle was shot and killed by Francisco Sanchez, a five-time deported illegal alien. It set off a national debate about sanctuary cities, San Francisco becoming one of them in 1989.

In July, Mirkarimi defended the policy, telling CNN’s Jake Tapper that the policy makes the city “safer.” Nevertheless, there were other reasons why Mirkarimi was booted. His tenure was dotted with controversy, one of them, as Katie mentioned, being a domestic abuse charge from 2012 (via Fox News):

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, 54, was defeated by Vicki Hennessy, a former sheriff's official who had the endorsement of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the sheriff deputies association. As of early Wednesday morning, Hennessy had received 62 percent of the vote to just 31 percent for Mirkarimi.

Mirkarimi was the subject of national criticism after Mexican illegal immigrant Francisco Sanchez allegedly shot and killed 32-year-old Kate Steinle on San Francisco's waterfront July 1. Sanchez had been released from Mirkarimi's jail in March even though federal immigration officials had requested he be detained for possible deportation.

But since then, the sheriff's oversight of the department has been plagued by other high-profile mishaps and controversies seen as contributing to his defeat. He had his driver's license briefly suspended for failing to properly report a minor accident while driving a department-issued car, and he also flunked a marksmanship test.

[…]

In November 2014, Mirkarimi also was forced to apologize for the bungled search for a San Francisco General Hospital patient whose body was found in a stairwell weeks after she wandered from her room. The sheriff is in charge of the hospital's security, but deputies didn't search the building until nine days after her disappearance. The city paid the patient's family $3 million to settle a lawsuit.

At the time of Mirkarimi’s domestic abuse charges, Mayor Ed Lee suspended him, but was reinstated after a vote by the city’s Board of Supervisors. Lee needed nine votes, but only got four. Federal action to deal with sanctuary cities was in something of a legislative limbo before being outright blocked by the Senate. The White House also threatened to veto the legislation if it was passed.

Cortney also noted yesterday that another bill, Kate’s Law, is popular among voters.

SF is also a county, like LA County. NYC has a Sheriff Dept but it is a city agency tasked mainly with collection of fines, unpaid taxes etc. Their deputies are peace officers, but un uniformed.

“Why does SF have a Sheriff?”

The City and County of San Francisco are one and the same thing.

The City occupies the entire County. Every square foot.

The local government is a singular one.

ANSWER: San Francisco Sheriff Mike Hennessey said the California State Constitution requires that every county in the state have an elected sheriff. Since San Francisco is both a city and county it has a sheriff’s department and police department. Each agency has different duties, with SFPD handling patrol work and the Sheriff’s Department running the jails, providing court security and enforcing civil judgment. Source: KPIX Channel 5

“What are the odds on her being a lesbian.”

A straight lesbian or a tranny lesbian?

He probably wasn’t sufficiently in favor of sanctuary cities.

“Nope. Married, mother of 2.”

Yeah. I spoke too soon. She’s also not in favor of sanctuary city policies.

Could it be that San Francisco is starting to lean sane?

You would be VERY SURPRISED how people feel behind closed doors, folks in SF are paying OUT OF CONTROL prices for housing and taxes just to have their city taken over by illegals BELIEVE ME even LIBERAL citizens ARE SICK OF IT!!!! The country is turning it IS happening regardless of what the LSM is trying to cram down our throats!!! This election says it all WHEN the citizens were in the voting booth their true feelings about their sanctuary city came to light!!!

He probably wasn’t sufficiently in favor of sanctuary cities.

The opposite. His replacement wants to allow a little more cooperation with federal authorities (on a case-by-case basis if public safety warrants coordination).

San Francisco is like New York. They always vote Democrat and for very liberal Democrats in national races, but the most liberal Democrats don't always win local races.

Highly doubtful it was a sanctuary City issue that got him booted. Highly likely it was the me-too movement that sent them to the sidelines. Nothing to read into this election result.

It very well could be. Pending a Jeff Sessions beatdown, they may be looking to surrender.

But I have to say, after looking at her pic, I'm now undecided on the lesbo thing. She looks like the perfect example of a lesbian cop. You realize that, in San Francisco, saying somebody is married and a mother does not quite automatically mean what it used to mean.

I shouldn't have to explain that here. I will require a picture of the "husband" and birth certificates for the children before any bets will be paid off.

Hennessy, a native of San Francisco and a Lowell High School graduate, lives in the city with her husband, a retired San Francisco police officer. They have two grown children.

Why does the Headline make it sound like he was Defeated because he defended the Sanctuary City Policy?

He was replaced by another Sanctuary City lover (with a Vagina, not sure if it was original equipment, for bonus points).

Big whoop.
