“Why does SF have a Sheriff?”
Because San Francisco is a CITY AND A COUNTY. They have the same boundaries. It has both a Police Department and a Sheriff’s Department. The Police Department takes care of the downtown, and the Sheriff the surrounding areas. It has a County Board of Supervisors, but no City Council.
Interesting. Two governments, likely with two property taxes.
