Lance Armstrong throws support behind 'Icarus' doping documentary

Lance Armstrong has thrown his support behind the Netflix documentary Icarus, which details the alleged Russian state doping system put in place at the Sochi Olympics. Armstrong has pledged to host a screening of the film on January 6 in New York City. Oscar nomination voting opens on January. (Update: it's been nominated.)

Fogel told the Hollywood Reporter that he first learned Armstrong had watched the film when he saw Armstrong's tweet in December, and he was happy that Armstrong responded positively.

"He was certainly punished in having his seven Tour titles stripped from him, and this is a subject that is obviously very close to him personally," Fogel said. "But the scope of the Russia conspiracy, in my opinion, shows that Lance's doping was really just a needle in the global haystack of sporting frauds.

"I'm hoping that Lance’s support of the film will help to bring further attention to this scandal and to Russia’s meddling into world competitions, and global politics, with the intent to win at all costs," Fogel told the Hollywood Reporter. "More importantly, I hope that his support will help to further protect Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, the whistleblower who is now being hunted by Russia for his bravery to tell the truth."

I think it’s one of these “redemptive” moves he’s undertaking.

Remember the good-old-days when people who disgraced themselves and shamed their whole family slinked away out of sight somewhere and saved us the embarrassment of having to deal with them?

He may still be the greatest of all time. I know for a fact, virtually ALL those competitors are doped up. So they are all more or less competing at a similar level.

Yes, but is this kind of doping, carefully tested in Olympic performance, and being deliberately predominant and prescribed in the honing of the military Russian fighters, such as the Spetznaz, to produce a soldier with powers beyond the diet and mental/physical conditioning of the best non-doped commandos? That is the question.

Or in our own troops when/if so-called psychotropic anti-anxiety drugs are prescribed to allay the naturally-occurring fear of/in combat makes the trooper unnaturally eager and brave?

This is the kind of concept exploited in the Hollywood-caricaturized action movie heroes.

Icarus is a superb documentary. The reality is that it's impossible to compete at a World-class level without "assistance" as Olympic and World records have long since crossed into the "superhuman" territory.

The narrator begins the documentary by describing his own experimentation as a serious amateur cyclist. Using "doping" his personal performance improved roughly 30%. That's an impossible hurdle to overcome by other means, which is another way of basically confirming your assertion.

Rather than pretend that it isn't happening, top competitive sports would be better served by sponsoring research and testing aimed at ensuring such enhancement regimes are safe and open.

It was an Obama Administration's NGO that destroyed Armstrong's credibility with a U.S. taxpayer funded investigation.

Apparently he didn't kiss Obama's ring. So he had to be destroyed.

Look what happened to Tom Brady. A report of slightly underinflated footballs became a major investigation. Why didn't the NFL just say "knock it off?"

Brady must have refused to kiss the ring too.

“NGO that destroyed Armstrong’s credibility with a U.S. taxpayer funded investigation.”

So should we be like Russia and fund and enforce the doping instead?

Why is this foul, honor-free little man Armstrong still stinking up the public square?

???

Who said anything about funding doping?

We shouldn't be funding frivolous investigations and litigation as a way to punish political opponents.

Isn't that a timely subject.
