The honor of which American athlete would carry the American flag for Team USA at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics came down to a coin flip today in Pyeongchang. And the athlete on the losing end of that flip is not pleased.
Speed skater Shani Davis decided to not participate in today’s ceremonies after he lost the flip to luger Erin Hamlin.
Davis took to Twitter and evoked African American history month in his commentary on the events.
I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. @TeamUSA dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer. No problem. Not all. My cousins wife throws the discus and currently holds the US record. She gets some sponsorship but is still largely self financed. Her husband and father in law built her a practice gym on their farm with a catch net. There are no rules about the throwing ring surface so they built interchangeable ones so she can train on the surface she will compete on. By the way, she’s black, Christian, and a wonderful person. I can’t speek for her, but I’d bet she’d like to bitch slap this twit.
Thank you both. My understanding came from a couple of articles I read years ago about the devastation of the Ice Capades in the eighties or early nineties for a few years because of the loss of many homosexual skaters.
