Political junkies have their eyes on the first battles of whats shaping up to be the electoral war of 2018.
Voters will decide two special elections Monday for seats in the Minnesota Legislature after the unexpected resignations of lawmakers late last year amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Voters in Senate District 54 which covers Hastings, Cottage Grove and South St. Paul will pick someone to replace DFLer Dan Schoen. In southern Minnesota theyll pick a successor for Republican Rep. Tony Cornish, who represented parts of Blue Earth, Le Sueur, Waseca and Watonwan counties.
A lot is at stake, especially in the state Senate where Republicans hold a slim majority thats already at risk because of the ascension of Sen. Michelle Fischbach to lieutenant governor. That move came after Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Tina Smith to the U.S. Senate to replace Al Franken, who also resigned amid allegations of sexual impropriety.
Fischbach, who was president of the Senate, is fighting in court to keep her seat.

All politics is local. Once the elections are over people see “trends” but in reality they are seeing the results of many individual races. While, after the fact, we can declare a “trend” each of those races was fought in a soup of prejudices, events and personalities. There is no overarching “trend.” It is what it is. (In other words, you can’t necessarily use the outcomes of a few samples to predict the outcomes of the whole composite.)
it’s Minnesota. not indicative of anything national.
2 special elections to fall on a Monday in February.

Special elections to replace two Minnesota lawmakers resigning amid sexual misconduct claims will be held on Feb. 12, notable for the fact it falls on a Monday.
Gov. Mark Dayton said he chose the date because it won’t conflict with precinct caucuses the Tuesday before nor will it interfere with a previously scheduled school board election in one of the districts the day after.
Republicans need to get off their dead-asses and VOTE! We’ve already lost several elections as a result of their laziness.
We need to stop fielding loathsome candidates.
Ya, sure...
Agreed. But normally the worst Republican is still a better choice than the best Democrat.
Getting Republicans to vote after this budget atrocity will be difficult.
The Rs should nationalize the midterms by running against Hillary (yes, again!) This wobbly, old *itch has herself out there in front of the Ds and we should take advantage of her strong negatives.
Here we go again. WHY should anyone vote for a "republican" candidate?
Will these "republican" state reps. vote to limit local g'ment, will they vote to lower local taxes.
We can clearly see that the majority of the national "republicans" vote to spend us to death, will NOT repeal OBAMACARE / TRUMPCARE, and the Senate version will not take up the House Spending bills
Let me lay it out for ya,
if Republicans win it’s an outlier and means nothing.
If Democrats win it’s a harbinger of the coming blue
tsunami.
Get it?
That line of B.S. will not work - Normally - really - who is a Normal Republican - Ted Cruz? McConell? name a few
And define some governing principles instead of writing without thinking
Sorry no. That's how we got here.
It's not indicative of anything politically sane, either.
Ventura, Welstone, Dayton, Ellison, Franken and other assorted nuts.
Don't read anything into elections that occur in the only state not to vote to re-elect Reagan.
MN is not a reliable indicator either way.
The Second Amendment is safe. At least in these parts. Thanks to Republicans in Missouri. We have the Castle Doctrine. CCW. Open Carry. Concealed Carry. All thanks to Republicans. Again, if your area doesn't have these things, sorry. Took years for us to get these things, but we got 'em now!
See #17. Work for change. It worked in Missouri. We tossed the Demwits. Then the St.L Republicans.
Amen!
Hope the Republicans take them...
