NSA Sent Coded Messages From Its Official Twitter Account to Communicate With Foreign Spies

During the first Cold War, American and British spies would sometimes place coded messages in newspaper classified ads to communicate with each other. And according to new reports in the New York Times and The Intercept, the National Security Agency (NSA) has updated the tactic, using its public Twitter account to send secret messages to at least one Russian spy....

According to the reports, the unnamed Russian met with US spies in person in Germany, and the NSA sometimes communicated with the Russian spy by sending roughly a dozen coded messages from the NSA’s Twitter account. The one important question....

Sending public messages while hiding in plain sight is called steganography and ensures that not only is the message secret, but the method of delivery won’t be suspected by anyone who doesn’t know it’s going on. The message is so public that nobody is thinking to look for it there, aside from perhaps those in the tinfoil hat crowd....

Russian spies reportedly used public websites to communicate coded messages back in 2010 before a large Russian spy ring was broken up. But this might be the first time that such a high-profile US intelligence Twitter account has been used in such a way.

FWIW... There are a number of open source and freeware steganography programs available to anybody who wants to use them, just google “steganography software” I’ve played with a few and I’m surprised that they were allowed into the public domain. You can hide a lot of things inside of other things (images inside of audio files, text inside of images, images inside of other images) and to a human (me) the hidden messages are quite invisible. I’m also pretty sure that most steganography can be cracked with the right techniques but with the sheer volume of what’s posted online it has to be a Herculean task.

"back in 2010 before a large Russian spy ring was broken up."

Not sure if this is connected to it, but it's worth remembering that WikiLeaks and Bradley "Cheese" Manning betrayed the USA with the illegal "leak" of State Dept. cables, which exposed operations and assets.

“I believe Comey’s bizarre and disjointed Tweets are coded messages to the Deep State.”

Absolutely - we’ve been decoding them on a regular basis. For example, when he says “stay strong”, that means “keep lying (or we all go down together)”. Sometimes he mentions their families, so as to be a bit more direct.
