There is enough in Confucianism that points in the general direction of gospel philosophy that it is not as jarring a step as it is from a number of other pagan philosophies.
If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; General Tsu
US universities: Diversity without a difference.
YEah, and they could also be schools for turning out deep embed spies into our system, much like the CIA already does with the college population, and would in China if they could.
The truth is everything is fair game now except the Constitution, Christianity, and capitalism. If you studied the Founding Fathers, you saw that they set up the country on these 3 principles and wanted to turn out good citizens by teaching these themes.
Today's student hates capitalism, believes there is no God, and doesn't see the Second Amendment, yet swears the Forth Amendment says babies can be murdered and there is no 9th and 10th Amendment. There are students today that long to mimic Venezuela or Cuba. No one has even told them why their Che T shirt is an abomination.
China is a communist hell hole, yet they seem to be here to brainwash our youth? What possible thing could we learn from Confucius that we couldn't learn from Jesus Christ? This reminds me of the little red books the Beatles flashed around back in the day. Did anyone ever tell them of the millions he murdered? Does Bernie understand the millions Stalin killed and all the world misery he caused?
If these Confucius Institutes are like some "women's studies" classes, then so be it. They can waste their time and money if they choose to, but if it is more sinister, they need to be shut down and the people sent home. Frankly I don't trust it. The Chinese know less than George Washington, I'm sure. If they draw pictures of flowers all day, well, that's their choice. How do we study Mohamed and Allah, Buddha, Confucius, and others, and leave out Jesus? Copying the life of Jesus would be more constructive even to a non believer than any earth bound man.
If the goal is to build positive, peaceful, people-to-people relationships with China, then it’s a huge mistake to close these.
Agree. The Chinese here are much more numerous these days. Look at those who buy US citizenship. Look at the Chinese American CIA type who sold out to the Chinese. Make no mistake who runs these. We damn sure did not allow the KGB on campuses.
I don’t particularly cotton to the idea of trying to teach a “secular Jesus.”
Go long or go home. Preach the gospel, not a philosophy.
The problem seems to be the choke hold of the Communist Chinese government.
What would you bet they are taught in Chinese too, not in (or with) English translation, making it difficult or impossible for Westerners to understand what is going on?
This isn’t even going to look like good Confucianism. It will look at best like Confucius under Marx’s torturing choke-hold.
You get it.
What would Confucius say?????
And if it is a subversive plot to move young people to accepting more Chinese influence and control?
IF the Chinese government is only allowing the colleges to staff these with people that the Chinese government have screened then it must stop.
No one should be dictating to OUR colleges who staffs them.
If it is tied to funding received from the Chinese government then it is no different then the screening that is done for other private chairs, positions, and scholarships funded by private money and federal/state funds currently.
You wants the money you pay the price.
We don’t need their money in that case.
We’re talking more than a course on Chinese history.
Thee is always a difference between a government and its people.
Follow the money. NAS doesn't want competition.
Yes, I see that.
"I had never heard of this before today"
Well, I have. Many years before you have, obviously.

Confucius Institutes have been around for more than 10 years. They focus on Chinese language and culture. I’ve worked with CIs. I’ve researched them. The critics of CI can scarcely point to any examples of where the CIs exercised any sort of politicization.
Personally, I think it’s critical for more Americans to study Chinese language and learn about their culture. This is the only avenue I see toward changing U.S.-Chinese relations.
I’ve worked with Confucius Institutes and researched them. There’s no political indoctrination going on. It’s hard enough to teach Mandarin, let alone use it to indoctrinate.
If we’re ever going to have peaceful relations with China, they are most likely to come as more Americans study Mandarin and begin to understand Chinese culture. IMO.
