Values are learned in RELATIONSHIP, CONNECTION individual to individual.
And by 6 years old, most of the values are already well on the way to being deep seated.
HOWEVER, a LOT of research has indicated that for kids who come from horrible backgrounds, ONE teacher showing some kindness and interest totally changed that child's destiny from horror and prison to sometimes great success.
More shockingly, sometimes it was ONE teacher showing one bit of kindness one day in the whole year that did the trick. Let that sink in.
So much Psychobabble! There is no way anyone could evaluate that or prove that. If one kid was reached by one teacher, the kid's destiny was not changed. I love the movie, "it's a Wonderful Life", but there is no way to know if one child was never born that the whole community is lost. Just as there is no way to know if one teacher asks a few questions that a serial killer was saved from his "destiny."
Interesting observation, with which I agree. On Judge Jeanine this evening they discussed a new HUD program (envision) designed to reach underprivileged kids with mentors (one on one) and work with them to change the choices that they are about to make in the future. This idea is a good one, because as a teacher I could not really reach out to more than a few kids each class. The program is going to be federal (which is a lousy idea) but will work locally and mentors will be drawn from all walks of life.
BTW her show was fantastic and she really took on the FBI.
