Why is the U.S. government withholding salary information on nearly 255,000 employees whose salaries are paid for by American taxpayers?
Over the past 11 years, our organization, OpenTheBooks.com, summed up and posted online the salaries and bonus information for nearly every person employed in federal government agencies a tally that mostly keeps growing and growing.
This year, our auditors filed our standard Freedom of Information Act request for the same information in Fiscal Year 2017 and we got a big surprise.
For the first time, the governments response involved massive and targeted deletions of salary data. A total of 254,839 federal salaries were removed from the Civil Service payroll. Thats a huge increase from the 3,416 salaries redacted in total in Fiscal Year 2016.
Considering that there are 1.35 million people employed by executive agencies, about one out of every five salaries are now hidden from the public.
In military terms, thats the headcount equivalent of 17 Army divisions. Its about equal to the urban population of Buffalo, New York, or Madison, Wisconsin.
Worst of all, its an affront to taxpayers who have the right to know who makes how much and in what position in the federal bureaucracy. Its our money, and we should be able to follow it.

They don’t want the private sector tax peons to see how bad they’re getting looted.
Just drive around DC and see how we are getting hosed. The safest place to be during a war would be DC because an enemy surely would not want to take out that number of useless at best and a fifth column at worse bunch.
I've read that the six richest counties in the US are right there.
Because the government hates to be held accountable.
I’ve seen their opulent secured gated neighborhoods.
The servants became the masters.
Just ask for your city to report what they are paying employees and you will find that you will have to go through miles of red tape to find out. Even then you will have to get a lawyer to unravel it.
I’d like to know their salary, their salary scale, their benefits, all their benefits, and their perks. And anything else they get from taxpayers. Do they get bonuses? Do any positions get bonuses? Are there any at poverty level salary?
I’d like to know what it takes for one to get fired.
Exactly, the 6 richest counties in the entire USA surround DC.
Stinking corruption beyond measure. The federal government needs to be completely dismantled and rebuilt from scratch.
They always like to say how much a sacrifice they are making by working for the government instead of the private sector.

When I had my consulting company in the 90’s I did salary surveys for cities, counties, and businesses. Then Federal
gov employees were making 120% of the same job in the private sector. By 2010 it is 140%. Not only that but it is almost impossible to fire them, and they work at about 60% of the pace of a business. However as you went up the org chart, the managers made a lot less, but were mostly incompetent.
Salaries, health insurance, benefits, retirement...
grrr....
And it happened under Trump in his first year - he must be building a secret cabal.....<p.Maybe they are going to become “do not fill” positions....
In SC, drones making 50K or more get listed.
grrr....
GS employees contribute to their own retirement. Their healthcare is supplemented (just like private employers do) but not free (neither is military retiree prime health care). What benefits other than being difficult to be fired? Everyone should expect a salary for work performed, so salaries, I hope so.
I think we know that we’re bing looted. Still, salaries should be an easy public records access process.
It is because all those employee’s don’t really exist, they are all fake and the money is used in various slush funds for illegal activity and to keep Congress and Other High Level officials happy and flush with cash.
The fastest way in America to become a Multi Millionaire is to get elected to CONGRESS!!!
